When Barack Obama commuted Chelsea Manning's prison sentence earlier this year, it was a victory for human-rights activists had been campaigning for years.

Manning is the trans former U.S. soldier who transmitted hundreds of thousands of documents to WikiLeaks, resulting in a 35-year sentence.

She spent much of her time in solitary confinement, according to an article she wrote last year in the Guardian. At times, she was on suicide watch.

The UN special rapporteur on torture, Juan Mendez, described what happened to Manning as "cruel, inhuman, and degrading".

But today, Manning is free. And in the September issue of Vogue, she's wearing a swimsuit in a photograph taken by Annie Liebovitz.
