While learning self-defence is important for everyone, the Vancouver park board is offering a course specifically for trans people.

The six-week course will introduce participants to a range of techniques, including awareness, avoidance, assertiveness, and action that will help to reduce the risk of being harassed or attacked.

In addition to the physical component of the course, there will also be group discussions about violence against women.

The course is open to participants aged 16 years and up and all fitness levels are welcome.

It will be held from September 10 to October 15 on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Templeton Park Pool (700 Templeton Drive) in East Vancouver.

The cost is $45 and registration is available online.

The course is being led by Wenlido, a nonprofit group of women who teach self-defence to women and their children.
