The University of British Columbia (UBC) is celebrating its alumni association’s 100th anniversary with a year-long campaign, and it threw a special event for its former students this past weekend.

The Welcome Home Party took place at the new and contemporary-looking Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre on Saturday (September 16), which was the university’s designated “Alumni Day at Homecoming”. That day’s activities also included an annual general meeting, alumni and friend barbecue, and a football game at the Thunderbird Stadium.

However, the signature evening event was what attracted a lot of graduates to make their way back to UBC’s Point Grey campus.

According to Steve Kennedy, the director of marketing and communication at alumni UBC, over 500 guests attended the inaugural event.

“We didn’t even sell out of tickets the week before,” Kennedy told the Straight during an interview at the party. “But Vancouver is a city that does things last minute, and we eventually had a waitlist with over 60 people on it.”

What made the party so attractive was its list of participating chefs, restaurants, and caterers that served up tasty sample-sized culinary creations, which included David Hawksworth of Hawksworth and Nightingale restaurant; Angus An of Maenam and Fat Mao Noodle Bar; Chris Whittaker of Forage and Timber; Andrea Carlson of Burdock & Co.; Clement Chan of Torafuku; Timothy Yu of Loafe Catering; and Lori Joyce of Betterwith Ice Cream, among others.

Beverage partners that served up libations throughout the night included Faculty Brewing, Strathcona Beer Company, Black Sage Vineyard, Mission Hill Family Estate, Quail’s Gate Family Estate Winery, Oddity Kombucha, and more.

Handcrafted cocktails by Grant Sceney, 2016 Vancouver bartended of the year, were also served at the party’s “Century Bar”.

Vancouver house band Dr. Strangelove provided the tunes during the latter portion of the night, playing crowd favourites from different decades.

“We hope to make this [party] an annual event,” said Kennedy.
