Cut: Slicing Through the Myths of Circumcision coming to Vancouver

    1 of 1 2 of 1

To cut or not to cut—is that a question you are facing as a parent of a baby boy?

If so, you might be interested in checking out a rather cutting documentary that addresses a testy issue.

Filmmaker Eliyahu Ungar-Sargon is taking Cut: Slicing Through the Myths of Circumcision—and its wince-inducing title—on a two-month screening tour across North America.

Ungar-Sargon, who grew up in an Orthodox Jewish household, was so troubled by ritual infant circumcision (which reflected his struggles with Jewish tradition) that he made a film about it. His documentary takes a look at religious, scientific, and ethical views of the procedure and the controversies about it.

The Canadian Foreskin Awareness Project (with founder Glen Callender) and the WHOLE Network, a grassroots non-profit organization that provides circumcision information, will present a screening of the film in Vancouver at the Roundhouse Community Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews) on October 24 at 8:15 p.m. Sharp. (Ouch.) Admission is by donation.

Ungar-Sargon will be joined by Dr. Paul Tinari (who received a government-funded foreskin restoration) and other possible speakers for a post-screening discussion.

(Wonder how many viewers will be sitting with their legs crossed?)

Here's a trailer of the film.

Neonatal circumcision is barbaric and ought to be prosecuted as a mutilating assault.

If the law were interpreted correctly, neonatal circumcision would be illegal already, just as ANY female genital cutting (no matter how minimal, not just the horrors of Africa) is.

But in the meantime, just say "No". His body, his choice, when he is old enough. He will almost certainly choose to keep it all.

This is going to be one powerful evening. I'm already trying to think of what question I might like to ask this film-maker (or the Doctor) during the Q&A session after the showing.

October 24 at 8:15 p.m. at The Roundhouse... got it. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for getting the word out about this evening session. The world is waking up about the inhumanity of this mutilating procedure. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. has a strong statement against cutting baby boys on their website. It's time for the politicians and legislators to outlaw it. Look forward to coming together as a community to move this idea forward.
