Vancouver finally has a vegan retail bakery.

Edible Flours (2280 West Broadway) welcomed its first customers on Friday (April 15) and held its official opening today (April 16).

This morning, customers found locally made artisan chocolates and a variety of baked goods, including cookies, cupcakes, donuts, and scones, on offer.

The bakery also serves coffee and tea.

Edible Flours, which is open Tuesday through Sunday, is owned by Kitsilano couple Paul Briggs and Alli Neville.

Everything the bakery makes is free of animal ingredients, and much of it is also gluten-, soy-, and sugar-free.

As a lactose intolerant, I am very excited for this! I hope they are as good as they look!

It doesn't make any sense for us to cause suffering so that we can eat things that aren't even good for our bodies! Thank you Edible Flours, for allowing us a place to go and indulge ourselves, where if I eat too many doughnuts I am the only one who will suffer the consequences ;) - not anybody else, of any other species.

No one implied anything of the sort. Thanks for being ignorant.

      And as for your link...
Veganism won't save the world--the whole food industry is completely unsustainable. Do you really think there's any possible way the planet can accommodate 6+ billion people forever?
We're still allowed to make decisions on what we eat, whether for moral, religious, cultural reasons, or simply out of preference.

And I should note that I am not vegan, nor have I ever been, however I hardly ever eat meat. But that aside, in being lactose intolerant I don't have many options for these types of goodies. Are you suggesting I should suck it up and be sick every day of my life just so I can have some dairy? I think we can all agree that that would be silly.

Anyways, I don't see why you need to be on the offensive here ONC. We're all entitled to our beliefs, and to eat whatever we feel like. Including you. There's no need to poke your smug nose in. Don't care for vegan desserts? Then go get some Marble Slab. I've never heard anyone criticize Islam for not eating pork, or Jews for being Kosher. Why the need here?

Edible Flours is so wonderful! I visited on Saturday and had delicious coffee and a spelt donut. It's amazing! Even if you don't have any dietary restrictions this place is so good it's worth checking out, the vanilla cupcakes are awesome too.

"Are you suggesting that breast feeding is unhealthy because it's not vegan?"

No. Breast milk is great for the babies of whatever species produces it. It's not nearly as healthly as an adult food.

I find vegans to be elitist, high maintenance, judgemental people who have no clue how the world really works or how other people that have not had such opportunities reallly survive. Nice that you can afford to eat such expensive treats but do you need to judge those that don't? Honestly, what business is it of yours what others eat? And further, what a bunch of hypocrites - you'd be the first to take those animal derived prescriptions and those surgeries that were practiced on animals - but you and your dog are vegan so you are good right?

Why generalize? I find many carnivores to be elitist, but for me to go stereotype and say all carnivores are know-it-all bullies and trolls would be ignorant of me. I know many awesome vegans and omnivores, all striving to do what they can for the health of everything, but to be perfect at this is an illogical demand. It's about reduction and minimizing damage where one has control. Vegans simply wish and strive to eliminate as much damageable actions as they can, thereby simplifying their lifestyle. To put vegans down simply because they have the ability to say "no" to meat is sad, especially considering the monumental impact that simple action has made. Try not to put your guilt on others.

This bakery sounds AMAZING and I can't wait to drop by! :)
