The NHL Winnipeg Jets' new logo is an air-force copycat

    1 of 1 2 of 1

The NHL’s newest old franchise, the Winnipeg Jets, unveiled its new team logo today (above, left).

And it looks just like the old Royal Canadian Air Force logo (above, right). To ramp up the military connection, the passenger jet that was featured on the Winnipeg Jets’ symbol of old has been reconfigured to one of decidedly military bearing.

In a statement released Friday, Jets co-owner Mark Chipman further solidified the hawkish tie-in: “We felt it was important to authenticate the name Jets and we believe the new logo does that through its connection to our country’s remarkable Air Force heritage.”

No mention as to whether or not the team’s owners had to beg permission from Stephen Harper to ally themselves with not only the PM’s dogged attempts to brand himself in Canadians’ minds with the national sport but also to possibly infringe on a federal copyright.

And there couldn’t be a connection with Harper’s controversial plan to spend up to $30 billion or more on F-35 fighter jets, could there?

Winnipeg has a strong connection to the RCAF through the Wing 17 squadron, which is based there. I'm not much of a hawk at all, but I think this is a pretty classy homage to a group that is historically significant to the city, while tying in the name the fans desperately wanted brought back (the original 'Winnipeg Jets' had nothing to do with Wing 17). Just some food for thought.

Of course they are going to use a military fighter jet in the logo! No one is going to be intimidated by a commercial passenger jet! The logo was designed in CONJUNCTION with the Royal Canadian Air Force!! Its not like they just ripped it off. Do a little research before writing dumb articles! Have some integrity.

Winnipeg and Manitoba in general have really strong connections to the RCAF. I think the logo is too similar but it makes sense to have it inspired by the Canadian Forces. I would have preferred the Avro Arrow to what looks like a CF-18.

The Air Force roundel (or logo as you call it) may be old, but it is still in use on Canadian Forces aircraft, usually in a military grey colour, but sometimes in blue, red and white as well. The wording of the article makes it seem like the roundel isn't used anymore by the Air Force, which is incorrect.

the Logo is too stiff. it has no fun in it. Just looks like a airforce patch. even from far away it looks to industrial looking. no identity like the vancouver canucks, predators, sharks...etc... stupid design!

Lazy writing. They worked with the Department of Defence to put this together. And it's damn nice.
