Stevie Ray Vaughan's big brother Jimmie plays Burnaby this summer

I was fortunate enough to have interviewed guitar hero Stevie Ray Vaughan on the phone a couple of times--including shortly before his tragic death in August of 1990--and I remember once asking him who his biggest influence on guitar was. I was expecting him to say Albert King, or maybe Buddy Guy, but with no hesitation at all he gave the nod to his big brother Jimmie instead.

The older Vaughan only had three years on his more famous sibling, but apparently that was enough of a headstart for him to get a handle on the blues chops that would inspire his kid brother to soar to legendary heights. Local fans of Texas-style blues-rock can hear what Stevie Ray picked up on when Jimmie Vaughan brings his Tilt-a-Whirl Band--featuring vocalist Ann Barton--to Deer Lake Park on August 11 as part of the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival.

Tickets for the event--which also features Kelly Joe Phelps, Meshell Ndegeocello, Amadou & Miriam, and Indigo GIrls--are on sale now at www.livenation.com.
