Sucky customer serivce

I notice here that customer service just ain't what it used to be. People just seem so lazy and unfriendly nowadays. And when you go to return something they look at you like your from Mars. Wtf??? If you hate your job so much then quit.

How much energy and enthusiasm

is one expected to put out daily in a thankless, minimum wage job? The hours are long, the rewards are none and the pay is barely enough to scrape by. In customer service, staff deal with only complaints all day - this can eventually erode anyone's positive attitude. People don't quit because there are no other jobs out there.

Don't judge if you've never worked in customer service.

This person must not have worked in customer service ever.
I've been in customer service for 8 fucking years and you have NO idea what we take from customers. People have bad days, remember that.

Maybe you should look at

The customers. I've been in customer service for 15 years and one thing I've noticed is some customers are just terrible. While I'm checking someone into my hotel they could be yapping away on their cell phone (or just texting on it) and pay no attention to anything I'm saying, then accuse me of not telling them (this has happened on more than one occasion)

Or maybe there is something going on in their lives, I once had a call in the middle of a shift that someone I knew hung themselves. Right after hearing that I have to go out to the desk, slap a smile on and be concerned that this guest has two double beds instead of one king. Not the easiest thing to do.

I worked in CS for 10 years until I couldn't be polite or friendly anymore (that happened after about 8 years but I couldn't leave until 10 years). I've noticed from a customers perspective as well that customer service isn't very friendly in many businesses anymore. I think that the 'Maybe you should look at' comment is correct. I also think it's the abnormally low wages in many of the positions. The minimum wage just changed to $10.45 but I was making $10 as a bakery clerk 17 years ago for saving money while I was in High School. A few years ago when I was in a job making $10/hour, and looking for work at another job, I couldn't afford my living expenses and had to go into debt while I searched for work. I am lucky my circumstances are positive and I could change jobs. It's a poverty wage. You could tell people to just find another job but it's often not that simple, especially if they have kids or student debt. Being in poverty makes people cranky.

Vancouverites have just worn us down with all their bullshit.

Are you an asshole?

Maybe you're an asshole.

I've worked in customer service since the late 80s

and despite the occasional assholes, minimum wage, or any shit that's going on in my life I still am friendly/polite to the customers, so I'm in agreement with the OP.
If you don't like dealing with people get into another line of work.

minimum. wage.

Treat people like human beings, and maybe they will do the same in return. It's called common sense!

I find for the most part modern customer service meets my expectations. But then, I'm not looking for someone to kiss my butt, but to do their job accurately and efficiently.
