Team building events

I work part time for a residential/commercial property company and it really stresses me out to attend my employer's team building events outside of my work schedule and not get paid for it. I always get unhappy faces from management and from my coworkers when I don't attend. Let's be realistic, all of these events are ways for management to determine if you're part of their inner circle or an ego boost for them to have their butt kissed by employees. My employer doesn't judge you based on your work and the results you bring, they judge you on a personal level and how much you kiss their butts. So what's the point of attending these social events when I am not getting paid to participate, won't get a promotion nor a pay raised, and not part of the circle? Just let me do my job and deliver results (tenant satisfaction and keep the building in one piece).

Team building....what a steaming pile of shit! Pay someone a decent wage and treat them with respect and you'll have a loyal employee for life.

Then don't be apart of a team??

They do these "events" for a reason. Why are you even part of a team then? Go work alone or do remote work @ home. Obviously you aren't a team player...

I see...

... not a team player. Most work is judged on this personal level---there are prob. 100 applicants who can 'do the job' for most jobs. That's not what gets someone hired, it's being friendly.

This Already Made It To "The Most Popular"

yeah, it's supposed to build comradere with co-workers and i've found that early on in a contract its good, but seriously, i have to spend every day of the week with these losers and don't want to spend my free time with them too, even if they are providing hamburgers.

Management set the tone

I blame management for making employees feel that way. Management sets the overall tone in the workplace. If they remain professional and stop playing favourites then more and more employees would be more than happy to attend team building events.

Play their game or quit

Your suffering is because you think it is unfair that you are expected to attend these events to kiss ass.

Then quit.

Or attend the events and do what is expected of you.

You may not like the culture of your employer and they sound pretty much like douchebags, but unless you are that one in a thousand who has the balls to challenge your employer and the wit to do it effectively, it is what it is.

On the plus side, you might have fun at an event. Accidentally!
