Don't Walk Home Alone at Night

Years ago, there was an incident that happened late at night which still creeps me out whenever I remember it from time to time. I was working late shifts full time back then and I didn't have a car. I had to catch the bus and then walk the rest of the way home. Once, I was walking home around midnight and suddenly a car pulled up next to me and started following as I moved down the sidewalk. I try to avoid trouble, so I faced forward and just kept walking. After a minute, I turned my head to see who it was. I remember seeing two men and they were in an old, shoddy station wagon. The driver had his face completely covered in a balaclava and sunglasses. The guy in the passenger seat was leaning back and I didn't really see his face. The driver was staring right at me as if he was trying to figure out who I was, but I turned my head and just kept walking, trying to stay calm. I guess I thought it was a prank and they're trying to scare me but they'd eventually drive off. A minute or so later, they hit the gas and sped off so that I couldn't get info on the car or see the licence plate. This happened at a time when there were a lot of gang-related killings happening in B.C. I've always wondered if it actually was a prank or if these guys were out looking for someone in particular. Maybe I kind of looked like their target and happened to be in the same place? Did I almost catch a bullet that night? I don't know. I'll never know.

People take walking for granted.

I'm a woman, and not a very tall one, and I worry about getting ambushed on my way to work through a short bushy section. I think about the possibility of getting ambushed every single time. I fear for my safety on some level every day: on the walk to work, or wondering about the crazy guy sitting next to me on the bus bench, or needing to check my backseat before I get in my car. It's a daily reality for women, being concerned about safety.

I would like to add...

People, stop staring at your phones and take the earbuds out of your ears when you're walking alone at night. Don't make yourself a victim. You should always be aware of your surroundings.
