Persistence for the sake of persistence?

A couple months ago, I tried to get counselling through a few different organizations. I didn't have any success. The first place turned me down but referred me elsewhere. I called the four other places and left messages with the two whose eligibility requirements I meet. I never heard back. Lately it occurs to me that maybe I should try again, but I'm not sure I know why. I don't know how to get better. I don't know what to work on, where to start.

One of the biggest dilemmas with depression is finding the will and the energy to get help. You know that you need it, but it can be so difficult unless you're filthy rich and can afford to pay $100's of dollars per session for a private psychologist. The counselling clinics that offer low-cost or free counselling are so overwhelmed by the volume of people needing their services that you can be waiting for months to get help. Sure it's a great suggestion to exercise, but when you're seriously depressed even getting up can be a monumental struggle. I wish you all the best and hope that you keep up the fight for wellness.

good advice, tho I would say that weight lifting is prob. lower impact, and _everyone_ of _any fitness level at all_ can do strength training and improve, presuming diet is adequate. Running, if you have decent fitness, sure, but if you don't, running is a pain. But if you're a runner, sure, it's a great idea.

I'd recommended checking your diet for 100% of the IOM recommendations for vitamins/minerals, and make sure you eat lots of fruit and veg!

The lower mainland and Fraser Valley have numerous avenues for free counseling. For women : transition houses can offer recommendations ( dial 211 for listings ), Battered Women's Support Services ( 604-687-1867 ), SARA for women ( 604-820-8455 ). There are numerous crisis lines that can be accessed 24/7 that most definitely can point both men and women in the right direction. 211 has numbers to various organizations that would be beneficial to you. Your local community service office may have counseling services as well. Hope that helps.

lol, love how you suggest we have lots of free avenues, then list resources that are only available for women.

I wonder why we have special services for women, then "general services" that are available to women _and_ men. Sexism?
