Do card machines calculate tip on top of the total with tax? If so, that's kind of shady.

Are you actually complaining about 15% of 5% of the cost of your meal?! You know it's super unsexy to be that cheap and skeevy, right?
Vancouver cheap-os are hilarious. $10 coffees, but god forbid they tip an extra dime.
And no, I'm a public servant, not in any relevant industry.

Yeah, or they can stop dropping their pants getting only minimum wage with no benifits and relying on tips. They can up their game, work at a better bar or restaurant, or better yet get out of the industry all together. If there is nobody to work for shady employers, they are forced to raise wages and hence prices to reflect that.
