A "Real Job"

After reading this site for awhile, I can see why there are so many single women in this city. I work with guys in their thirties that are line cooks that have a families that they are supporting. They are happy and kind and their wives are lucky to have them. Oooh, god forbid he works in a grocery store too. I've worked with a lot of good men in these jobs and the level of snobbery is sickening. I feel sorry for guys in this city. Signed a woman that is happy with her hardworking husband.

38 year old line cook

I read that person ripping that as somehow not being good enough to equate to a real job.

It seemed so oddly specific.

I also tend to wonder what the person criticizing that as a real job, does for their job.

You are a "woman that is happy with her hardworking husband". OK, glad to hear that you're happy with your choices.

If a person (male or female) is in their 30s and is a line cook or grocery store worker, then they probably don't have much formal education. That's fine; not everyone is destined for formal degrees and whatnot. A line cook in Vancouver on average makes $14.29/hour. If you are supporting your family in Vancouver at that rate, you're going to need to work as many hours as you can if you are grossing only $2240/month at $14.29 x 40 hours. The line cook may even have to take a 2nd or 3rd job to make ends meet to support a family. So kudos to them if they can do this week after week, month after month.

I know guys with Master's Degrees who are complete assholes and who have good jobs but you'd never want them as a partner or even a neighbour for that matter.

That being said, I don't feel sorry for guys in this city, nor do I feel sorry for the women in this city. You make your choices and you live with them. If a person (male or female) rejects another person (male or female) because of inadequate looks, money, lineage, height, connections, etc and feels eternally lonely, I don't have sympathy.

Don't you get it?

Having a real job, often means your spouse has to work too. That puts a crimp in the world travel and Yoga. Commuting from a workng class home is also so passe. Get wtih the program!

Ugh

When people keep saying something that doesn't make sense to you, chances are, you haven't experienced it. Most women looking for a dude with a "real job" mean just that, including line cooks, retail workers, construction workers, anyone with a shred of independence who is willing to work to provide for their necessities of life, not coast off someone else's goodwill (and, usually, credit) because they are too millennial sad boy/spoiled brats who don't want to reconcile themselves to getting up in the morning. There are thousands of millennial dudes in Vancouver who are like that. And they meet young women who are working our assess off and have done basic adult things like secure credit and housing, and they moooch it super hard under the guise of love until they either bleed you dry or start fucking around. In the end, it's usually the woman who is stuck with the debt and bullshit, because in my generation, we're the "achievers" - you know, because we get out of bed and go to work.

I don't work in a blue-collar job (I'm employed in the software industry), and still I frequently get the rolled eyes, turned-up noses and disinterested attitudes from women (well, anyone actually, and in any social context, not just dating -- but I digress) when I tell them that I work as a software engineer. Seems that men get shot down for not having prestigious-enough careers -- in the case of my line of work, examples that would probably make the Vancouver women keep their attention for 5 extra minutes would be project manager, technical product manager, product marketer, etc. Apparently, my job title "Senior Software Engineer" is still not considered acceptable enough for many -- maybe not as acceptable as, say, solicitor, financial analyst, investment banker, doctor, etc.

And before I get a barrage of comments from hateful, presumptuous readers... yes, I do own my own condo, own a fairly new (2-year-old) car, am fully capable of doing the dishes and laundry, can manage my finances and pay all my bills on time, exercises regularly and eats healthy, is attentive of my grooming/appearance so that I don't look like I just rolled out of bed, etc. etc. I've had enough of the blanket accusations of Vancouver men being irresponsible man children.

Bravo for this post!

Made my day reading this.
I know there are unpretentious, nice ladies out there somewhere like the lady who wrote this post but wow, the snobs really seem to outnumber the quality females.

14.29 an hour exactly! You obviously are not in the industry....we do have unions and there are establishments that do pay well.

Remember back when you could earn a living working in a grocery store and it was considered a perfectly fine, respectable thing to do for work?

Former cook.

No one, and I mean no one world harder than kitchen staff. Sadly, they're not compensated for their hard work. A bloody yoga instructor makes the same money as a line cook. Give one a hug would you?
