Take a look around

Just for a moment forget everything you've read, been told, and told yourself about how amazing Vancouver is. Take in the incessant rain, the moldy buildings, the poor people seeking shelter on crowded streets, the fascination with wealth and the appearance of wealth, the ludicrously unattainable property, the crowded backcountry with queues (seriously) on hiking trails, the rodent populations sustained by human filth, the clogged roads, the grotesque vanity all around and the rate of consumption it demands, and ask yourself if this is how we should live. Do you actually like this place?

I've lived and traveled all over Canada and the world....Vancouver is fine and offers a decent place to live and work. Driving distance to Seattle and Portland and even Idaho and a day and a half to California.Maybe try and enjoy yourself instead of complaining.

To be fair

You can easily say this about any other city .... given some adjustments.

Stop spreading ignorance

OP: You are clearly insular and ignorant about quality of life and the rest of the world. I wouldn’t want to live in Detroit or Rio de Janeiro for fear of being shot by gang violence. I wouldn’t want to live in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where as a woman I need a male chaperone for travel, medical procedures and obtaining permits. I wouldn’t want to live in Chiang Mai where poor children sleep with their families on cardboard in the streets and where handicapped people are left crawling along the ground. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere in the USA considering they have a mass shooting (4 or more dead) almost every single day of the year. Nor would I want to live in Gwalior, India or Zabol, Iran due to their crisis of air pollution. I am happy to live in peaceful, clean, quiet Vancouver. I am more than happy to be in Canada. OP, if you think Vancouver is rot, you should go try living somewhere else. I suspect you wouldn’t last a month. You want to see rats? Go to Kuala Lumpur where they are 9 inches long (body, not including the tail). Take your whiny, complainy stupidity and go live in the projects in Johannesburg and see how hard life and existing really is. So tired of this ignorant theme of how “terrible” Vancouver is.

Canada is a relatively wealthy and stable democracy, hosting a free and well-integrated society with modern infrastructure. Of Canada's major cities, Vancouver has the mildest winter. Housing is expensive here - as it is in most desirable cities, like London or Sydney - but the food costs are comparatively cheaper.

You'd get more bang for your buck in Spuzzum, of course.

I miss it

My lifetime home. 6 decades, born here. It's nothing like it once was. A victim of its natural beauty that has been its downfall. This is "progress"? I'm beyond saddened that so many of us can no longer live in our native place, forced out by the immeasurable greed of people who have no love for this place or this country. Politicians who ignored the cries of the citizens warning of the crisis until it was too late to repair. The damage is done and Vancouver is dead.

Yes I do

Have you ever travelled? I'm always more impressed with Vancouver every time I return. It is not perfect, but where is? Your negativity is what is truly depressing.

Yes. I do. If I didn't, I would have left already.

Plenty of 1st world places in Asia that are clean, peaceful and safe. Korea, China, Japan. Certainly lower air quality but MUCH cheaper cost of living. And Kuala Lumpur is probably the most underrated city in the world. An excellent 1st world infrastructure over it's grittier old streets. And the food in KL is WAY better than in Vancouver. And it's insanely cheap. KL is also a short hop to the Perhentians with beaches a billion times better than Vancouver.

I loved it here

for most of my life... until the last 10+ years when it's become over-crowded by people who heard about what a great place it is to live moved here.
