and its pretty much the same. i quit places that do that, but it doesnt stop all the people that wan residency here coming fomr other places. it sickens me that my canadian classmates couldnt get jobs in the field.

No one owes you a job and you need not be a slave. Move on if it's not for you. In tech, the fantastic thing is that you can easily strike out on your own (not like banking). For me, when I am onto something I simply don't want to work some 9-5 or even 9-midnight schedule. I work because I love it. It doesn't mean others have to, but we sure get a lot done when those committed to work get together. There is no "missing out" for us. In the end, people should be paid by their output (not their effort, or seniority).

Overtime is something that many people work a lot and never get paid for. If you're on salary, lots of times you're going to work additional hours and not get paid for it. You can try requesting it but most people don't. If you're a manager you don't get overtime, period. That's why so many companies have learned that sneaky little trick of calling an employee a "manager", so they can overwork them and not have to pay overtime. In many cases the Manager winds up taking home less money than the other employees because they get overtime and the manager doesn't. Basically the only people who regularly get overtime are in a union and get paid hourly.

Good for you. You will do the way you want just as I will. Just don't cry when I don't hire you and when you cannot do the things I can do. I will retire in my 40s, you'll love or hate work till you are 60 something. It is all about choices. You make yours I make mine. Neither is right, but mine is right for me.
