Everyone's had a bad year, except me.

All over social media around this time of year, people post their disdain for the previous 12 months. Normally I am one of them. But the thing is, this year has been the best year of my life. I didn't find my soulmate, I didn't get the promotion, I didn't win the lottery. None of these things. In fact, on paper it might appear like this year has been terrible for me. But the thing is, this is the year I got help for mental health problems that plagued me since childhood. This is the year I admitted I had a substance abuse problem. This is the year I became truly comfortable in my own skin, accepting my flaws and embracing them. Truly embracing them. This is the last year of my twenties and I am so happy to say I made it. This time last year I wasn't sure I would. But I made it. I am finally in control of my life.
I hope for those who didn't have such a profound year that you are able to see some positives out of 2017. It can't always be the "best year ever". But I think if you really think about it, it hasn't been all that bad...has it?

Sure there was a few crushing bumps in the road, but that's life, 2017 still goes down as one of my best ever.
Bad or good...

... these are just perceptions, it's not like they're accurate representations of reality grounded in something external. Different people find different things bad and good. Compared to my parents' or grandparents' generation, I think it's a lot harder to achieve what they achieved---I mean, keep in mind that many of our parents/grandparents were addicted to alcohol and tobacco, smoked at work, maybe even drank a bit. So, just off the top, if you're the sort who might function better if you could smoke at work, the anti-smoking Nazis have made it impossible for you to be employed.
There was a Supreme Court Judge who refused to stop smoking in her office, they installed a fan for her, they did not _dare_ try to smash her in the face. But we don't have equality in BC, any mere mortal, not a BCSC Justice, would just get smashed in the face for smoking at work.
So, "best year ever"? If you can adapt to the servility required in 2017, maybe. Nobody dignified, however, could think being forbidden from smoking at work is dignified. It shows how much freedom we've lost in just one generation.

I can say the same thing. I'm finally OK with who I am... The path to this point was difficult, but only because I wasn't accepting what was there all along.
