Feeling defeated

I feel hopeless, drained and sad. I got laid off while on maternity leave and went back to night class 4 months post partum to complete my certificate. I have a lot of work experience and a piece of paper that says I completed some sort of schooling to make myself look better. I have sent out 48 resumes and I am getting nothing back. I am supposed to be happy but I feel like the world is working against me. I don't know how much longer I can go on being defeated.

you get some help from one of the many taxpayer funded support groups available exclusively to women.

That sounds very upsetting. Sorry that you got laid off. Are you able to collect E.I.? Maternity benefits from gov’t? If you can that creates more time to look for work. Do you have a support network of friends helping you? If you don’t there is a program called ‘nobody’s perfect’ that helps new mothers with learning to parent. They might also have a better idea of more resources for you. When I was born my mom was single and on welfare. She lived in a house with friends and they babysat for her. I turned out okay and so did she. Not sure what your situation is, other than what you’ve written but I hope that this helps! Also, there are free counselling and crisis line services that might be helpful if you are feeling defeated. Google vancouver crisis line.

Some tips

Sorry to hear you got let go during your maternity leave. It’s illegal so get legal counsel. I threatened to sue my company and they settled with me for half a years wages. Secondly, there may be nothing wrong with your resume. Please don’t be discouraged. Go to have your resume professionally reviewed and re-written by your local Work BC office. Their services are free. I had mine re-written by them and landed a high paying job with this updated resume. Thirdly, put yourself in front of as many people as possible by volunteering. Show off your skills and role skills this way. People hire good people that they already know. Good luck and I know you will find your way eventually.

Hang in there...

...you're just getting started. Anonymously submitting resumes is a very low-return method of finding a job. Keep submitting those resumes, but try to use any personal contacts that you have in the field of employment you're pursuing. I submitted over 250 resumes before I found a job. Good Luck

... I should have been focusing on your post-partum condition. It would be prudent to talk to your doctor about your feelings of sadness and hopelessness; post-partum depression is usually assessed at 4 months following baby's arrival, but perhaps it was over-looked by your healthcare providers. Take care of yourself first, then worry about the job search. Please reach out to someone regarding the way you're feeling. You don't mention any partner in child-rearing, but I hope that you have some help with this monumental task. Cheers
