An elderly lady

with a walker came on the Skytrain today and none of the young folks made a move to offer their seat. I was also standing and asked a young teen, "Stand up for a passenger who needs to sit down!" He stood up and she thanked me, C'mon young people, be POLITE!!

People have become so self absorbed and they exist in their own little bubble. Walking around with their headphones on while staring at their cell phone screen. I have started calling them droids as they are becoming more machine and less human by the day. Sadly, it seems the only way to get people to do the right thing is to publicly humiliate them.

Can't stand them

I can't stand all these self entitled little millennial snots, and their liberal parents. I hope a plague comes by and wipes them all out.

My experience was the opposite.

I'm a 50ish man with a grey beard. I'm in better physical shape than most 30 year olds, and I stand on SkyTrain because I like the feeling that I'm surfing along and maintaining my balance skills.
However, I am still sometimes perceived as "elderly" by young people on the train.
Twice now, I've had some very polite young person (both times a young woman of Asian heritage) get up and very caringly offer me their seat! I was surprised and just said "No I'm fine, but thanks!""
One of my friends told me that it's a traditional Chinese attitude to treat all elders with great respect - ?- If that's the case, then I'm already reaping the benefits of it. Try me again in 20 years or so - I'm not quite ready to sit down just yet.

( NOTE to young people: Having grey hair doesn't necessarily mean the person is about to die, or is too decrepit to stand on a moving train. It may just mean that we can't be bothered with hair dye. But thank you for your kindness!)

Sounds like you need therapy. So much hate expressed for a whole generation of people you don't know personally. Anger management class, if not seeing a psychiatrist. Not sure it's safe to have you walk freely in society.

I never blame young people for anything much.

Look at the parents, I say.

You, obviously did the right thing. The young person who did something good will thank you also, lol

I think we'd be all safer if some people were locked up.

You don't know

I'll get a bunch of downvotes for this but.. I would never tell one person to stand up. I wouldn't have personally called one person (the teen) out. You should have just directed the comment to everyone like hey won't someone give up their seat? Most likely someone who didn't need the seat would have stood up. That teen may have had some type of invisible disability or something and you basically bullied them into standing up because they'd look like a shitty person if they don't or maybe they had some type of personal health problem they didn't feel comfortable disclosing to total strangers and so felt the need to stand up. That's shitty that no one would offer a seat but it's not your job to offer their seats for them. I see the intention though which was nice but just because someone is young doesn't mean they need to give their seat up.

Totally agree with you. I don't like the OP's attitude of trying to shame a young person even with good intentions. It's better to use courtesy. Just ask everyone if someone can offer their seat, I'm sure someone will. Everyone will feel bad, and learn a lesson. You can get what you want without targeting any one person in particular.
