Really gross

Everywhere I go people are spitting on the street?! Every time I’m waiting at a bus stop, someone has to huck a loogy. Where are the young kids getting this gross habit from? Just because an 80 year old man is doing it too, doesn’t make it right...

Spitting...

... is normal human behavior. If you don't like it, that's just your culture. It's a statutory offense at most, not against common law, and the public health statutes were instituted when TB was a problem, which it is not really anymore.

Spitting is a sign of August Freedom!

Even worse are the disgusting troglodytes who blow their snot Farmer John style all over the sidewalk. Looking at you, prick who catches the bus at Broadway and Main in front of the Poutine joint.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a disgusting habit and I consider it to also be a sign of major disrespect to anyone around you. It so insulting when someone spits right in front of where you’re standing. What the hell is wrong with people???

Cultural thing

I notice this a lot in Richmond. People even emptying their nose without a tissue. I’ve had to tell a few people that this isn’t maninland China.

It use to be on the law books....

This is a simple demonstration of how societies change and why archaic rules and traditions aren't seen or appreciated for their value until it becomes a problem again.
Rampant spitting was common in the past. As information about the spread of disease become known we passed laws to prevent spitting in public places. Society became healthier. Then it just became polite and common knowledge in our culture that you don't spit on the sidewalk. Fast forward and people begin to see the law as a silly relic of the past of no importance and removed said "outdated" laws. Then replace the society with a new crop of people who never understood the problem, never experienced the problem or don't see it as a problem.....and the problem returns.
Now ...replace spitting with "freedom of speech" and we see the dilemma we are facing today. Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

Sorry

Look, I know its gross and I don't like it either, but I do it too. Its a guy thing. There's something wrong with our sinuses or something when we wake up, especially in cold weather. I think allergies might have something to do with it too. We get this phlegm in our chest and sometimes our bodies try to expel it when it gets in our throat. We have to spit it out or else it feels like choking.
Again, I'm sorry, I get grossed out too when I see other guys do it, but I swear its something we can't really help. Its just another one of the annoying things about male biology. I try to step away from people if I have to do it. Sometimes I try to spit into a kleenex so other people don't have to see me do it.
But we have to do it. Can't be helped.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse

Clause 4.21 of the City of Vancouver Health By-Law No. 6580 (the “Health By-Law”) says:

No person shall expectorate, urinate or defecate in or on any public street, lane or park except in any public facility specifically provided for that purpose.

I don't care

I'd rather look gross to you, than feel gross myself. If I have a loogy, I'm not going to choke it back and swallow it to have it sit in my stomach for you, and then possibly end up barfing it out all over the place. I'll just spit it out, and try not to hit you with it.
