$30 million from Vacant Homes

So the vacant home tax is going to generate $30 million, but how is this going to be collected? The offshore owners don't really have incentive to pay.

Be added to their property tax bill. No way to avoid paying that bill unless ypu want to lose your investment.

A property can be seized if taxes aren’t paid.

Don't worry

It will cost more to administer than it's worth. It will do zero to help housing, but hell yeah, no problem getting Canadians to line up behind a new tax! Facking dumb as.

You don’t understand much.

The owner has to fill out a form. If you leave the property vacant you pay the tax. It’s part of your property tax bill. It isn’t hard to do, it’s not expensive for the city. The tax generated $30 million the first year.

I have 45 notices sent out to me so far, throw them all in the garbage. Every week they come, sometimes twice. So tell me again how much it costs? I am 1 guy. How many homes in Vancouver? You seem to think 30 million dollars will make any difference at all. So, please tell us how it has been earmarked to build units, "affordable housing" for families. At $3750 a month rent to be affordable in Vancouver's official stats....A 3br like that will cost about 600k in Van (if we go with the box, wood construction, where the entertainment every night is listening to your neighbors flush a toilet or get a glass of water) let's see that's what? 50 units!!! Wow, good thing the need isn't that high, eh?

Now, if you want a real solution, you'll quickly see the answer is very simple. Principle residence only, you own one you pay world wide "income tax" (not only property tax) in BC. The end. No more money laundering, no more empty units bought and sold overseas. Simples. But no, hell, let's make a tax. The dumb fucks will fall for that. Then we can run for office on the back of 30m. It's not even a drop in the proverbial bucket. You sound like that dimwit at city hall who suggested rezoning above Spanish banks....so 30m a year, you can buy one house. Cannot build anything, but maybe he was thinking tent cities.

Banter aside, the answer is not a tax or levy. The answer is laws and zoning. Increase supply and you'll find prices will fall. Ask yourself why that is not done, ask yourself who locally benefits. Follow the money. 30m spread across those with empty homes amounts to a laugh. Not a single person will, as a result, put their unit on the market. The 30 million is not the key here, it's putting units on the market. Notice if you will, why they don't mention how many units went on the market as a result of the tax? Not on Airbnb, but on the market. At "affordable housing" rates...even the userous ones the city defines. The answer is there and it's there for anyone who wants to see it. Why do so many in Vancouver feel happy that the rich paid 30million? It does nothing to help you and nothing to hurt them.
