He doesn't refuse to use them. Peterson doesn't care very much about gender pronouns. His issue is with whether the government should have the right to force us to use certain words. The gender thing is a micro issue related to the larger question of compelled speech. Should the government be able to force us to use certain words under threat of violence or imprisonment? Peterson thinks not. He has repeatedly said he would use people's preferred pronouns if they asked. He just thinks compelled speech is a power that should not be given to the government, under any circumstances, no matter how harmless or well-intentioned it may seem. A very reasonable point of view to share and discuss.
