This is more of an observation

than a confession. I am 60 years old and recently relocated to New Westminster. This is not a judgement but I've never seen so many walkers, canes, wheelchairs, electric carts in my life and many of the folks are a lot younger than me. What's going on in New West? Makes me realize how fortunate I am to be fit and healthy!

It's New West

People go there to retire and shit. I'm sure that out of all the old people that move there, not all of them are "model old people"

It's working class

These are people who worked hard all their lives. It trashes your body.

New West is actually a pretty decent place to live, but because so many people have bad impressions of it, it’s still more affordable than other places. That means that more people with disabilities who can’t afford the higher costs of housing in some other locations, move there. Unfortunately disabled people are disposable in BC so they receive a pittance to live on that barely enables them to pay for food, let alone housing.

New West has been more of a poor and working class neighbourhood until quite recently. The working poor and pensioners often have more chronic health issues to deal with. You're probably seeing long term residents. Be kind. Their old communities are being gentrified out from under them. I've lived in Sapperton for more than 10 years. Much of the corridor along Columbia Street from Braid to downtown has been transformed. Uptown is soon to follow.

You missed what the poster said, lots of these folks are younger than his 60 years.
He's not talking about "retired" people.
I live in New West and know exactly what he means.
I get on a bus some days and have trouble navigating through the walkers and canes.

I thought

That there is some correlation between physical fitness and neighbourhood walkability. People who live too far from things to walk tend to drive and the lack of exercise causes insidious health problems. So maybe this is what you're seeing.

I have to admit

I love New West.
