Homelessness must be addressed

People often make comments on homelessness situation by referring to the expensive vacant units that are sitting with no apparent plan to utilize them during the crisis. I often wonder if the reason for inaction is that no one is creative enough to think of a way to blend the various interests into one project -- well coordinated to address the needs of the homeless and even people who are currently being displaced. Why is it that we have a bunch of expensive committees being struck all the time but never as far as I know has Vancouver had a committee made up of concerned professionals landlords tenants and citizens that can work together to address these issues on some levels. For example, what about finding a way to reach foreign buyers to propose that they do offer their properties in some way, to be utilized and taken care of by the prospective tenants. What about offering to allow them to rent in exchange for their labor in cleaning, landscaping etc where suitable matches can be made? In short, legalities are one thing but people need desperately to start talking to each other again like human beings despite language differences etc because in fact our interests may mesh and may support better solutions than if we isolate ourselves.

You know what solves homelessness? Getting a job..being smart with your money...being a good person that can live with roommates...Move to a cheaper area. It's not rocket science.

The idea works on paper..

Putting this idea into practise will likely not work. Only because a majority of the people who are homeless, have major mental health issues. These are not the people who would be capable of working, let alone keeping up a home.
These empty units are not supportive housing for people coming off the streets, and I doubt the landlords would be willing to become certified to run such an establishment, or treat their workers fairly if this was a viable option.

Also @registereduser:
The people who are homeless are jobless and homeless for a reason. Typically, as stated above, they have serious mental health issues. They are not capable of doing the things most functioning people are. They are typically drug users as well, and having a regular job, and bills are not something that these people want to concern themselves with. Doesn't fit their lifestyle.

If you had to house a homeless person to be a foreign buyer? Our housing market would be in the toilet!
