I am Not Rich

I own two houses with assessed values of 4.5 million and 2.7 million. I am sick and tired of people in the media portraying people like myself as wealthy. I have worked extremely hard for this. Working 7 days a week at two jobs with no vacations for years. Most young people have no idea what it takes to own property and save vast amounts of money or how much you have to sacrifice. You have to sacrifice vacations and going out drinking with your buddies. I see you on the weekends drinking and in the morning driving around in expensive financed cars you can't afford wearing designer clothes bought on credit. Young guy at my work is driving around in a brand new BMW and drinking expensive $5 coffee everyday and eating lunch out everyday and going to clubs on weekends and running up bar tabs paying one credit card bill with another credit card and he has the audacity to say they are entitled to own houses without putting in the work. He's getting evicted from his rental and he doesn't even care. Bragging to his friends about how the landlord can't touch him for six months and how uncool the landlord is. If you are a young person and are not working two jobs 80 hours a week then you can't complain about housing because you aren't putting in the work like we did.

Yeah, right. Way to deliberately misunderstand what's happening with Vancouver.

I love how these money-drones eventually have a deep seated need to passively aggressively brag about their money.

Work 80 hours a week!? For what!? So your descendants can have a party after your assets get broken up?

You also don't need to take some young fool as an example of people who can't get it together. At least these young fools, unlike you have life running through their veins.

All very good

and good on you for your sacrifice, but I will quibble and say that yeah, you are rich if you have over 6 million in assets.

If that were true I would have two houses now too. If you are surrounded by people like your coworker, and I’m sure there are lots of people like him, then I can see how you would have a warped sense of youth. I can’t speak for the majority but all of my peers work 2 jobs and a side gig and we are just getting by. You also don’t factor in those with illness or disability. Not everyone is privileged enough to have the physical or mental capacity to work 80 hours a week. I’m guessing You were also privileged to be able to buy in at a time where housing wasn’t as astronomical as it is right now.

I think people are too sick and tired of you portraying everybody else as lazy or entitled.

You mean to say your property value has nothing to do with location, timing and pure luck?? Not even a bit? How much of that 4MM value is your work vs all the other factors? Homes in major cities in the prairies average 350K. So I guess prairie people don't work hard enough, eh? You managed at least 10 times more output?

I'm not saying you didn't work hard, but your argument shows me you have convinced yourself your wealth is 100% product of your hard work, when it isn't. And that's ok. It isn't for almost anyone.

Oh, and have you stopped to think young people may spend money on stupid s**t because there's little else they can do with it here? Go ahead and tell your co-worker to stop partying and start saving for that moving target of a 700K 1 bedroom apartment or 2MM dilapidated home. Life is short. They will never be able to buy a home here, so let them live a little while they can.

Young people somehow think if we become full on communist they will have a big house in kits....

I met a guy who

was working full-time and living in his van so that he could save up the $ for a down payment on a home.

You have assets worth more than $7 million? That makes you rich. That's the ducking definitely of rich. Rich, you are. It's you, the rich person.
It's hilarious enough to listen to middle class people here forever pretending they are the poor and working class, but now every the millionaires want in, pretending not to be rich?! Tell you what bud, pass these properties on to me. I'll run supported social housing out of them while you learn what not rich actually is.
