Broke and Broker

Moved to Vancouver with a monthly budget plan that would allow me to properly pay rent, transportation, groceries, tuition, and have a little extra for fun, even if I only made minimum wage. Well, I got so screwed over because of my work and student loans that I didn't even make enough to cover my rent and fell into huge debt and depression and even now go weeks at a time with literally no money to my name because I can't afford anything out here. Vancouver makes me miserable.

This wouldn't be an issue if you worked in tech, in a lucrative, senior engineer role with many years of experience. In fact, I just accepted a job offer at a another company with a way better salary. The pay is so much better that I can comfortably cover my mortgage on my Yaletown condo and still have plenty left over for eating out and entertainment -- I won't need to make a monthly household budget anymore! I just wish they gave me more vacation days so that I can use my newly-elevated wealth to travel and see more of the world. It all goes to show that if you have dreams and aspirations, stick to your goals and work hard to achieve them, you will be handsomely rewarded. Pity the poor folks slaving away at part-time jobs in retail or hospitality. Oh, and being a hipster is not an actual job.
Bursaries

Bring your grades up and apply for bursaries through your institution...do your research and apply to whatever you can...there are plenty of bursary funds that are often left untapped...if you have good academic standing...you should apply for your share...

Well-played if a troll; if not, you scare me in a Patrick-Bateman kind of way.

"Yeah tech is great! Except for the people, and the tech."
Depends on the company. There are those where everyone who works there are just painfully boring to chat with in the break room, and are just there to punch in each morning, go through the daily motions and collect a paycheque. Some companies encourage people to be jerks and compete against each other because management has to fulfill a quota of the number of supposedly "low performers" that they have to fire each year, to keep their talent pool young and their staffing expenses low. Still others are corporate battlegrounds where managers are busy building their own little empires and the rank and file staff are left to their own devices, slaving away at meaningless busy work that is only intended to make their superiors rich. I've worked at all such companies in the past -- and I agree, it is not fun at all. I'm always keeping tabs on what's happening in the local tech job market and I make a move and get out as soon as I find something better. It's hard to find the one tech company that produces a useful product that users love and the people creating it care about, where people working on it are encouraged to grow and be their best, and are given the freedom to make decisions and take charge of their careers. One has to do their due diligence, network with other people in the industry, shop around the job boards and ask pointed questions during job interviews to see what the company is really all about, how a potential boss treats their employees, and whether they are an overall good fit for you. Review sites like Glassdoor are also good resources, but beware of fake reviews.

No, I'm not a troll. If I scare you like so, then that's great. Thanks for commenting!

how did you budget that on minimum wage? vancouver is v expensive but you need to learn to budget better. maybe do some research about how much it actually costs to live here.
I’m guessing

Your “budget” would have made a person actually making minimum wage in this city laugh out loud
