Clothing pricing

CBC reports that Wal-Mart is charging more for plus-sized women's clothing, but not plus-sized men's clothing. While that inequity between the sexes is unreasonable, I have a different take on this issue. I am a small-sized person. For years I thought it inequitable for me (and other small-sized persons) to subsidise the clothing pricing for larger-sized persons. The cloth and labour components are greater for larger clothing, yet I paid the same price for my smaller clothing. While I do not applaud Wal-Mart's sex discrimination, I hope to see a wide-spread correction to the injustice that I experience.

Takes more fabric for plus sized women’s wear.
Have to account for hips and boobs.

Agreed,

I totally agree. The smaller the size the less you should pay.

any mall or store or shopping street and 80% of the floor area is for women.
Clothing designers have to continually redesign and reshape the women's fashion industry every 3-4 months, incurring high costs.
If the colour tastes change halfway through, they'll be left with hundreds of thousands of tons of unwanted women's clothes.
Women's fashion development costs wayyy more due to the ever changing whims of women.

The men's? The redo it every now and then, maybe add a couple stripes and change the colour and that's it. Change the tint on the kahki shorts and button up shirts, costs nothing.
I guess I'll be accused of being a misogynist, but I used to work in the clothing and textile industry so I ought to know.

Larger people take up more room and use up more resources. If one eats more, then one has a bigger grocery bill. Consuming more fabric in clothing should result in a bigger clothing bill.

So....

Do you agree that people with big feet should also pay more for their shoes? What about long skirts as opposed to short ones? I think you’re being a bit silly, and I’m also a smaller woman. If there’s going to be any righting of past injustices (or actually present ones), why don’t we start with gender-based pricing instead? You know, how women pay more for virtually everything including clothes, haircuts, dry cleaning, automotive services, etc, etc.....

I think you have missed the point. Walmart Canada faces criticism for charging more for plus-sized clothing for women. Some shoppers consider this an unjust "fat tax"; a form of shaming people.

The OP is offering a different take on the news story; that is, the start of redress for a long-time inequity - smaller people subsidising larger people's greater consumption of resources. It is not a fat tax; it is righting the existing inequity.

The OP also said that larger men should also pay more for their consumption of more resources, an inequity based on sex.

And, yes, if people with big feet use more resources, then their shoes should cost more. I suspect that if the clothing item is otherwise identical, then a short skirt costs less than a long one.

Right here

Is the level of current 'thought' in the zeigist.... it's not all about YOU as an individual and your individual needs in the world... this is the same thinking that sees schools chronically underfunded because "I don't have kids in school" and public transportation issues because "I don't take the bus" and health care fragmentation because "I am not sick" on & on & on.... Fat people are easy to target because you can see one of their issues but most people have issues - they just aren't as visible.

When did we all turn into such self-obsessed, self-centered & self-focused as***** ? What happened to compassion & understanding for each other and human condition? There is a frightening focus on conformity and being alike these days. @So person actually said if you have bigger feet your shoes should cost more... like can anyone help the size of their feet for pete's sake.... let's go back to foot binding eh?!? So depressing...
