On Culpability

Once, I watched a film with a few classmates, and one of them was a woman I had decided I was in love with (who didn't feel the same). Anyway, it turned out to be basically a Nazi rape movie. I had to leave halfway through the movie because I couldn't deal with the realization that given the opportunity I would probably be the same monster as any of the depicted soldiers. I'd like to think I'm a good guy, but without laws or repercussions would I be?

... been programmed to think "good" means something other than what it really means, which could, in fact, be nothing.

Without laws or repercussions, you'd be what you are instead of what your Programmer wants you tobe. Laws and moral values are just computer programs someone put into your body.

You think you are a good guy, yet you just admitted being tempted to rape women???

From a biological and archeological viewpoint, a human is an opportunistic scavenger. With a herd instinct and a tendency towards power (D/s) relationships.
Power is intoxicating - it distorts one's judgement and exaggerates one's personality. You don't usually get to see much of somebody's true self until they either have lots of money or power (Dominant expression), or they're debilitated for a long time (submissive expression). Unless they're under the influence of chemicals (booze, drugs, etc.), which may give glimpses.
What people wear most of the time, like a set of clothes, is a persona. It's an invention, their notion of who they think they are. If they're lucky, they go through their whole life that way and never find out differently. Only in death does it fall away.
Laws and morals and all that are trained behaviors. Humans are innately beastly and have no "better nature" - research has definitively established this. In terms of built-in programming, you're no better than a cat (and dogs are more decent than you).

What you're talking about (with the movie) is consent.
I personally don't like power relationships, despite my naturally dominant personality. I'll role-play lots of stuff in bed, but it's for the benefit of my playmate(s). It's kind of meaningless to me outside that.
Many people enjoy power relationship and that is the most frequent expression of "human nature". Lots of people get off on sexual D/s, and some like it so much that lack of consent is arousing to them (rape fantasies and like that).

One of the many bad things about war is that "rape and pillage" is just a set of standard behaviors in that circumstance. Whether you're a monster is not something you learn except in that moment when the opportunity presents itself.
Thus why "opportunistic" scavenger, as in the first sentence.

ur behaviour is ur choice

do ypu want to hurt someone, do you want them to hate you, ypu want to have sex with them but rape isnt sex. this spooky thought might be the result of not fully understanding rape and its effects, andany people dont do things not because theyre illegal but because they dont want to hurt people like that. plenty l
of people do things while theyre illegal.

That's "anthropological" not "archeological". Though there's plenty of stuff in museums to support my case.

Sorry, autocorrect fail.
Never type something that long on a mobile device screen keyboard. The AI is definitely A but not so much I.

doesn't sound like you're a good person if all that's stopping you is the law/repercussions.

@on predation, thanks for raising the bar. Intelligence tends to get punished here by the idiocracy but it is appreciated.
@Probably, well aren't you the smarterest. Sometimes I try to imagine what certain posters look like and their expressions when they hit that 'post comment' button, and then I laugh and laugh.

Your assumption.

I had a b/f who often said things that showed his evil culpability. Like being around a hot drunk woman at a club who was complimenting him on his hair, "but unfortunately her brother was with her protecting her" so nothing happened.
