I Looked Up...

... the assisted suicide regulations, and they're so stupid. Most people on PWD wouldn't qualify, because their disabilities are not imminently life-threatening or whatever. It's basically a way for old people with terminal cancer to off themselves. Why shouldn't assisted suicide be available to people on PWD who don't enjoy any quality of life? Why should people be forced to stay alive? In many European countries where they have assisted suicide, most anything qualifies if the patient is consistently not enjoying life, would rather be dead.

Circa 2000, the "Swiss package" was about that much in USD.
Switzerland has had assisted suicide for ages, and it's basically at will. This comfortable version of the "one-way ticket" was a direct flight and all reasonable amenities, on your journey to the narrow passage.
Needless to say, you'd get there on time :-)
So you max out your credit cards doing stuff for another person, and in return they get you this deal, and off you go (pun intended).

My instinct for self-preservation became intermittent some years ago, so I like to joke about it.
Smile and say that I've always wanted to see Switzerland...once.

It's all about money

The medical and pharma industries can't make money from dead people. It's in their interest to keep you alive and suffering as long as possible. A dead man tells no tales and doesn't pay for the doctors new porsche.

Medical Aid in Dying

You're correct that at this point, death has to be "reasonably forseeable" so right now it is mainly accessible to those with terminal illnesses. The law has to start somewhere and luckily there are a lot of hardworking policymakers and volunteers that are trying to improve the law so that in the future, MAiD will be more accessible to more people. It's a work in progress and I'm proud we have made it this far, while realizing we do indeed have a long road ahead.

I think if you wanted to die the threat of pain or arrest isn't gonna stop you. No one can tell me whether I can make the decision to die. If I want to die I'll make that shit happen. Dont need some freaking law to give me authority to do that.

I couldn't have said it better myself, I truly believe it all comes down to that. Such a shame we can make the decision for our pets but not for ourselves....

A change I would rather see, as someone who is on PWD: actually being able to get the healthcare I need so that my life would be less miserable.

The federal government did not follow the judgment of the Supreme Court of Canada and it will be struck down when a case eventually makes its way back to the SCC.

It's unbearable suffering from mental illnesses and chronic physical health issues. You look "normal" from the outside but barely get by.

Loved ones only want you to hang on so they don't suffer. I've tried countless therapies and treatments and I'm exhausted. I've had one horrible thing happen after another including falling seriously ill due to doctors errors twice, and guess who pays for it? I have great difficulty working, and the money you get from disability is a joke. I've been single for years and will likely remain so due to my health problems. Can't be financially independent due to my health problems and sick of doctors only making me worse. I've been this way since I was a teenager. It's been over 20 years I've tried. I've done everything you're supposed to with counseling, meds, and trying an experimental treatment that surprise isn't helping.

If you have no quality of life, you should be able to choose without having to spend thousands to do so safely in another country. Yes, I've considered it and looked into it. Don't judge others that consider this as an option. To live life in such unbearable pain is horrible....
