Hanging out with friends, I’ve done the Dutch thing or splitting the bill equally between us. But with one friend, we have this thing: one person will cover everything. And I have to say the feeling is much more exhilarating when someone covers everything or I’m covering everything. When she treats me, I feel taken care of, spoiled, loved, and when I treat her, I love her reaction and her glowing texts to me afterwards. We both feel so much more appreciative of the time spent together and of the generosity and thoughtfulness. Splitting the bill is fine, fair. But it really pales in comparison to showing how much I want this person to have a joyful moment and know that when they say they will get the next one, they really do and it makes you feel so taken care of when the usual day to day is every man/woman for themselves and no one wants to give 1 millimeter more than they have to. Thank god for friends like these where we leave economics and calculators behind!
