A Selfish Prick

In my suburb the noise bylaw is 8pm. Right now and every fucking weekend/some week days there's a guy a few houses down using a goddamn power saw. It's not a use and stop and then use again in 10 seconds or whatever it's constantly on and cutting wood. He usually cuts until it's dark which weeks ago didn't happen til much after 9pm. I could certainly call the cops on him to stop but he will just keep doing it anyway next weekend. What the fuck do I do...live with it? I guess I have to. Maybe I'll be in a bad mood one night and actually call it in. I want quiet after 8pm from power tools.

You should call the cops and let them deal with it. You pay taxes and one of the things your tax dollars go to is for policing. This person sounds like a selfish idiot who doesn't care about their neighbours.

Maybe just go talk to him. From experience hes either on a deadline or just hanging out and having beer being a hobby woodpecker. Hed probably just say hey yeah I can stop at 8pm. I know I have a cnc router and sometimes Im in a pinch and run all night. However Id be happy to go let the neighbours know and try not to be in a tight schedule often. You will brew hate and neighbourhood wars calling the police for something you could try first dealing with man to woodworker.

it's probably the best way to get it stopped, it's worked for me in our neighbourhood. Usually the people doing it don't know there's a by- law. 8pm sounds a bit early tho' I must say.

I rented an apt in Whalley, and shortly after I moved in, the store beneath got rented out to a printing company and I would have the sound of the printing press going all day and sometimes as late as 11pm.

I used to live in a semi shabby district of a city where the neighbours: Grew marijuana(a bike gang) across the alleyway... another one used to run a semi-formal scrap yard and could sometimes be heard Arc Welding at 2-3am...there was a local band that rehearsed most nights, and often jammed together into the late hours of several nights per week...a pair of barking dogs 1 a husky the other one a german shepherd living next door always barking...
I could go on. This was back in the 20th century, when people were a lot more tolerant.

What municipality do you live in that has an 8 pm noise bylaw? In all of the ones I’m familiar with that time only applies to construction noise, which doesn’t include a person (don’t automatically assume it’s a guy because there are many women who also enjoy woodworking) running a power saw. Construction noise has to relate to actual construction, not just someone doing woodworking, such as making wooden crafts, etc. Don’t get me wrong though, because I can totally understand why you’re ready to lose it! I would be too. It’s extremely inconsiderate for anyone to be inflicting that type of constant noise pollution on their neighbours. I think you really should approach them (maybe even by a letter) to let them know how disturbing this is for you.
