Simpsons

I like Apu's part, and I am from India. Why are people trashing the Simpsons now? I'm against this PC shit. Comedy is comedy.

This PC garbage is really getting old. The Simpsons has always been a good show but the 90s were the golden years. It went downhill in the 21st century when the original writers left and then along came these new writers that decided to copy Family Guy.

So many people want to play the victim. Look at me, feel bad for me, because I'm being victimized. In a situation where someone is really being hurt, of course they deserve to be heard and helped through their hardship. Sadly, we have got to the point where laughing at a cartoon character is considered a war crime. Something has got to change because this won't end well.

It's just a cartoon.

Well then

Maybe people should start calling you Apu then, I'm sure you'd be okay with that

Apu is intelligent, sucessful and decent. I don't understand why it's a problem.

What PC people like "well then" don't understand

Is that characters like Apu function as archtypes for much larger societal stereotypes, that people DO carry in their heads on some level. He's funny because, as terrible as it is, it is true. Same thing with Homer (negative stereotype of a semi-alcoholic, abusive father, living in a home he doesn't deserve, with a wife and a job that are way too good for him, etc), or anyone else in that show. That is the beauty of the Simpsons: it plays upon stereotypes very brilliantly, and whoever said the 90's was its best time was right.

Anyway, what PC people deliberately misunderstand is that comedy, especially the politically incorrect varieties, that REALLY go into the racist, sexist, religious, 'oh-my-god-did-you-really-just-fucking-go-there?' varieties, actually serve as a pressure release valve, in people and society as a whole.

Why is this?

The world is fucked up (or at least has its fucked up parts), and on some level, whether mild (Arrested Development) or wild (South Park/Adult Swim, etc), we need to laugh at these very real pains, truths, tragedies, and differences between us all.

Comedy, in its ultimate form, just as music and any kind of art, is the medium which unites people, not divides them. It just uses laughter as the primary tool to do this, instead of primarily sound to convey feeling, writing to convey thought, or dance to give movement to all these things (if I've missed anything, I apologize!).

In any case, these PC people are very much a minority. Most people aren't this stupid and extreme. They're just a very, very, very LOUD minority, and they're grasping at straws, knowing they're circling the drain, bit by stinking bit.

In any case, OP, take comfort in the fact that the most wily comedians out there are almost certainly using these PC/hyper-religious/whatever people as material. We'll probably have material out of them for the next couple of decades, until it fades into a mild embarrassment or quirk, like greasers and jocks in the 50's, or something.

Anyway... all the best, comedy lovers! Keep on laughing and smiling!

I'd be more worried about people who get their basic human conduct norms from television or newspapers or magazines or whatever. It's like we have all of these PC rules for crazy people who get all of their moral compass from...magazines! So we have magazines written by crazy people, for crazy people. And if you go 'I don't need a bloody magazine to tell me how to live,' they think there's something wrong with you, because they think everyone is crazy like they are.
