Crazy Poor Locals

I would never take my North American money and live in a country where we ruin their culture. Not even on vacation.

This post was in response to the guy claiming to be living in Thailand bragging in response to the current rash of "budget" confessions around here. I think this is what's wrong with the world today.

I posted that. I currently live in Singapore (thus the title), not Thailand although as stated I do enjoy products from neighboring countries. I cannot fathom how I am ruining culture with the crazy poor locals (1/6 households are millionaires). But anyway, believe what you will.

Um...

You mean like one particular cultures has done here, to ours? Like that?

Reality check

As if you could.
Those countries are easily numerous enough to absorb a few dozen or even a few thousand of you. Which is probably more than would want to move anyway - far too complacent for that. And just about any culture is much too well established to be threatened by an influx of Americans, never mind Canadians.
Especially since Canada has no perceptible culture by comparison. Canadians assimilate quickly for that reason.
But yes, stay here, by all means. I'm just about done figuring out how to profit from all the people who will go broke here in the next 10 years. Wouldn't help me if any of them left.
I need that business. Not the money, I have that already. The intense satisfaction of giving those who have borrowed beyond their means, the sort of thing they deserve.
Good and hard.

I'm sure the expats living in Asia have minimal effects on the local cultures. What amazes me with the massive amounts of Western media i.e. music/film and how well these cultures preserve their traditions; with exception of mainland China. Mao set out to destroy his own culture. From what I've seen Asians have a strong connection to their cultures and make a good effort to preserve it even amongst rapid development. Some of the nations have developed at 7% for years. Remarkable really. We know what happens to a place that changes quickly. Something gets lost. But Asia remains Asia. Asian culture is so strong it's changed our culture. So take your money and go see Asia. It's awesome.

I've been an expat so long though in countries richer than Canada and/or with better quality of life that maybe I should worry about destroying Canadian culture when I return to visit family in Canada. Right OP? Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! Happy Chuseok! LOL!!! But yeah stay home if your narrative helps you accept your self imposed limits. I was trying to say in my confession that I would like to see more adventurous Canadians out here. There aren't that many of us, and we don't noticeably effect these countries outside certain Thai islands and Bali. And even then the expat/tourist population is mostly Europeans, East Asians and Australians. It is possible to be a responsible traveler. Getting wasted in Phuket is very different from supporting local businesses in authoritarian Myanmar.
