LandlordBC

It's amazing how LandlordBC justifies the 4.5% rent increase next year. Did any of you read it? It's probably still in the top 10 to the right of this confession. Whose wages grew this year? Mine didn't. Even if they did I'd get maybe $100ish more a month? Great! That will go to the expensive food in the store I have to buy. Heck! Maybe I could even afford brand name for fuck sakes. Just because you see a stat that may show that wages increased this year for some people that does NOT mean you can take it from us right away. We NEED these wage increases. We have been fucked in the ass by the Liberals so hard that we need time to heal.

The current NDP Govt. approved the increase.

What they forget to mention

The landlords are conveniently forgetting to mention that when a tenant leaves their apartment, the owners can increase the rent to any amount they want. If a tenant has lived in an apartment for 20 years and is paying $1,000 per month and decides to leave, the landlord can raise the rent to any amount they choose. The annual increases that the gov't controls only apply to current tenants.

Enjoy Liberal Life! :)

Imagine getting a cost of living raise annually!!!
My time left in this city is finite unless this happens.
Slowly being squeezed out.

There is going to be a riot soon enough

Interestingly

this proposed rate increase is only .5% over what it already is, and that seems lost on people. Also, just because you 'can' raise the rent, doesn't mean it will happen. Landlords tend to value good tenants and reward them by not raising rents every year. The rage against this doesn't seem to be based on any real understanding of the issue.

Don't panic

If your rent is $1000, the landlord can currently raise it to $1040, which is 4%. If the rate if 4.5%, the rent could go to $1045. Math is easy.

Go ahead bash the BC Liberals

Save some bashing for your lefty friends in Victoria and Vancouver too though. The provincial government approved the increase and are working to raise taxes on valuable properties. The city government keeps ratcheting up property taxes on commercial buildings especially. You know...like the ones that have rental suites in them.

People...

... are being eaten alive by general inflation---rent is the largest single expense that people voting NDP in hopes that it will improve their lot (not rich people doing it for emotional reasons, like volunteering at a soup kitchen because you don't need to work those hours), so they all expect the Government to somehow attack the single largest line item in their monthly budgets---everything else is inflating at a similar rate, toilet paper, fruit and vegetables, nuts, meat, etc. But there's no real way for Government to control those things, plus for some reason maintaining a dwelling isn't seen as "work," so people think there's nothing wrong with taxing a landlord heavily.

Really, there should be no statutory rental control at all---it's just a hidden tax. Maintaining a home takes work and money---and while it's not all spent at once, something like a roof can cost thousands of dollars, so a landlord needs to make enough to have enough to cover contingencies like the roof needing repair, and this is on top of a landlord making prudent investments for retirement, I think some people think landlords don't need to invest because they can sell their properties, which is an unreasonable expectation--people with valuable estates should not be expected to take a pay cut during their working years and then to divest their landholdings when they retire.

All of this is just class envy. It sucks. Some people are born with bigger lobster claws than others. But like Dr. Peterson says, if you don't like it, bucko, go clean your room! And maybe you won't get to the top of the dominance hierarchy, you're never going to be the Stephen King of whatever you do, but you can certainly climb the dominance hierarchy somewhat, but it takes hard work, and you've got to deal with the crushing reality of existence and being alive and ultimately responsible for yourself, the Government can't bloody hold your hand.

People need to accept that they need to climb the dominance hierarchy rather than act like Government needs to help them up. Imagine that Government is just a corporation that some people work for, it exists to give those people money, if you're not one of them, quit thinking it will help you.
