Most Canadians live out that way, you know.
The most populous provinces shape national policies and define Canadian politics. That is how it should be.
Vancouver is more like a town than a city, and certainly still thinks like one, which clashes badly with its global pretensions. That sense of delusional self-importance is completely out of touch with reality. And as the full scope of laundered money and political corruption is gradually revealed, BC will lose whatever sliver of credibility it had left.
This property bubble will eventually implode. The weed economy and whatever other fantasies the Vancouver Venture Exchange is peddling these days, will inevitably disappoint in economic terms. The revenues of the BC government will crater as tax receipts dry up, probably just in time for the NDP's shiny object and boondoggle spendathon to really hit its stride.
And then this province will need a bailout from the federal government.
Which necessity gets BC a booster seat, bib and pacifier when time comes to sit down and have any serious political conversation. For at least a decade after that, no one, and I mean no one, is going to take you lot seriously. Besides, hardly anybody here has displayed any maturity (or even a grasp of reality) for a long time, enabled by the wealth effect of housing prices gone berserk. More like a bunch of rich brats having an extended hookers-and-blow Vegas holiday, in the context of local politics.
What happens in Vancouver, stays in Vancouver and hardly ever impacts anybody else. That's just a fact. The news reports things of interest and importance, and Van is not that.

And the USA coverage is all day every day on all channels, everywhere. It was nice traveling in SE Asia and not having it in your face constantly.

There's a post that deserves more traction. An Intelligent and eloquent description with everything that's wrong with not just the lower-mainland, but Vancouver island.

An outsider looking on, I have no stake in the proceedings and keep my distance. Saw lots of red flags when I got here, so I stayed away from the frenzy. I can afford to be dispassionate and factual as I describe this slow-mo train wreck.
Others are not so lucky. Too many people's fortunes are tied up here, and they have few good options. They don't want to hear it.
I'm kind of surprised it got posted. Grateful for a change in policy that allowed this. Hope somebody finds it useful.
