We are our parents

Someone said this at lunch today and it got me thinking. Which of my parents' quirks have I inherited? I figured that from my mom, I inherited her penchant for going over-the-top when she gets bad service or gets ripped off at stores or with companies. She goes full-on Asian tiger momma. From my dad, I think I've inherited his need for solitude. My mom never understood it. She's very independent but likes people fussing over her. My dad is also very independent and does not like fuss. I think I got the best of both.

Going over the top for bad service is a "good" quality in your eyes? Jesus, gives folks a break some times. Customer service is incredibly unrewarding as it is, people never commend for good service but are quick as "tigers" to pounce at any error.

An idea...

Work for a year in a front line customer service role such as server, retail worker or call centre rep. You will come to realize that your Mum, amd from the sounds of it you, are the type of entitled people customer service workers loathe.

I’m like your mom: I will freak out when I get treated unfairly or if someone gets treated unfairly. Maybe I won’t raise my voice, but I’ll get my point across. I’ve asked young people to remove themselves from the seniors/handicap transit seats. I’ll demand recognition for my work. I won’t pay a bill just because someone writes an invoice. And I’m like your Dad too. I’m independent and don’t like people fussing over me. I don’t need people to carry out my daily activities: work, exercise, eating. Maybe we are siblings :)

to my horror a couple of years ago I was becoming my mother.
All her neurotic bullshit, judgmental views and negativity.
So I started making a real effort to improve myself.
It's quite scary to realize you're becoming a person you loathe and despise.

proud of being a jerk?

“she’s very independent but likes people fussing over her.” This sentence makes no sense.

A great way to see if someone is an asshole is to see how they treat wait staff and service workers. I recently dumped a girl because she was rude to waiters.

That what you do to the least of my brothers, you do unto me.
