Cyclists : get a f***in bell!

So this stupid old guy full of self-entitlement comes riding beside me on a narrow portion of the seawall bike path...no bell to let me know and oblivious to the impending accident he could cause by riding so close to another bike. Anyways, no sooner does he pass that he suddenly slows down, as does a few others because a stupid kid is crossing. A crosswalk is nearby but does the even stupider parent watching sdo anything parental, like prevent them and control their child? No. Anyway, none of these numskulls on bikes bother to do the sensible thing like tell the kid to get off the damn path or warn the kid sound-wise. No. There gingerly slow down like it's a mindless goose and almost cause an accident behind them because the slowdown was sudden. The old guy then shouts "what am I supposed to do?" Use your fucking brains. If this was a roadway and you're driving, what would you do? You use your horn accordingly to warn off stupid people who jaywalk and to warn when passing. Bells cost nothing. They prevent accidents. Do here is my advice to you and every idiot who shows me that they know nothing about bike riding: INVEST IN A FUCKING BELL AND LEARN WHEN TO USE IT. Seriously. If you haven't got the sense to get one and know how to use it, stay home. But don't get bent out of shape when you show that you don't know what to do on the road or paths. Anyone got any other common sense things to tell stupid cyclists?

... shout "on your left" or whatever. I dunno about bells, those sound tinny. As for the child, it's a park, the child shouldn't have to watch where it is going, nor should the parent "control" it, it is not a bloody doberman.

As a cyclist, you have a duty not to hit things, both as a duty to yourself and to the other things you'd damage, be they people or shrubs or whatever.

I'm more concerned about your inability to use the park than I am about some old cyclist.

And it's because posts like these that confirm that the mass majority of you cycling loonies are completely self absorbed.

I agree.

The spandex warriors are the worst for this. They have all the latest high-tech trendy gear but never a simple bell.

Whoa!

You seem very angry. I hope you can calm down.

I have no problem being vocal

A bell wouldn't help with the mindless goose kid, but a sharp word of warning would suffice.

The only thing I have to tell cyclists is that they should obey roundabout rules, stop signs, and red lights.

Also not ride in crosswalks, or use their cellphone while riding. Saw a guy doing this the other day with a CHILD IN A BASKET on the back of the bike.

I cycled extensively when I was younger, and almost never had an accident - when I did, it was my own damn fault. And even if it wasn't, you can be right, and dead. Cars can't stop as fast as you can, and your life can change in an instant.

Obey the street rules, or realize you may pay heavy consequences. And stay off Clark Drive and 12th Avenue during rush hour - you may have the legal right to be there, but you're pissing everyone off, and endangering yourself needlessly.

Vision And The Moonbeams may have had a hands-off policy with respect to policing bicycles, but physics is a harsher mistress. Stay alive.

Voices work too

I’m a cyclist sometimes. Im also a driver and a pedestrian sometimes. I find it much easier to use my voice to either shout at some stupid pedestrian texting while walking on the bike path with their head down than I do to use my bell. If I want to pass someone I’ll also often just say on your left or excuse me. And as for parents who don’t pay attention to what their child is doing on the sea wall, they aren’t being responsible parents at all! Any place that has such a mix of pedestrians and cyclists is a place where small children should be very closely controlled for their own safety.

Sometimes pedestrians are so unaware of their surroundings that if I ring my bell they will just do something unpredictably stupid. When I ring my bell sometimes it'll surprise people into backing more into the bike path. And my bell isn't even loud, I don't know why they get so surprised. So I have to start ringing my bell half a block away until they finally figure out what's going on. If I'm already close to a person then it's too late to use my bell, I have to either stop or focus on getting around them safely.

common sense cycling

I'm a daily cycle commuter, also a pedestrian at times and a driver of cars too...anyways what I would like to say to people is to stop rushing. Don't always be looking to pass. Keep two seconds of brake time between you and the next vehicle.

Do that and there would be very few problems.

I get that people think they need to be there on time, but the important thing is that we all get there.

Dick cycling behavior includes passing too close, no use of bell or voice, and plunging into crowds of people - I fucking hate cyclists who do this, they make all of us look bad.
