Employers

It really annoys me that employers want all the bells and whistles of their employees - top of their graduating class, perfect GPA, years of experience, must have this that blah blah blah... but pay the shittiest salaries ever?! WTF employers. Raise the salary and benefits bar if you want the most experienced employees.

in Calgary, trying to survive through the downturn. I couldn't agree more. I have the GPA, work ethic, good balance between intelligence and people skills. I have a MSc. And what employers want vs what they are willing to pay is a joke. They definitely take advantage - part of the problem is the oversupply from Universities. I work with many different types of tradesmen and they make significantly more than most university folk I know. The main problem with that though is that its harder on their body and they wage ceiling is relatively low - Where people with degrees tend to earn more in the later portion of their life.

I dunno - tough life out there. Llearn to save and trade stocks.

You’re absolutely right. This has been a real problem in Vancouver for a long time, and I’m amazed that more attention isn’t being focused on it as a result of the widely-circulated information about how unaffordable our city is as compared to other cities in the world. I’ve worked as a consultant for many of the large firms in this city, some of which are multinational. I’ve been privy to the salary levels of all of them as a result of my work, and what I’ve seen is a huge discrepancy between upper management / Operating officers and the rest of the workforce. The biggest problem in these private firms is that salaries are kept secret. That means that the person who is doing exactly the same job as you could be making significantly more money, and you would never know it. I’m not a fan of unions for some situations, because they keep people from being rewarded for achievements (wage ceilings regardless of how good you are compared to coworkers for example), but at least unions offer wage transparency. It’s way past time for fat cats in Vancouver to share the wealth so that the people who are supplying you with it can afford to live here too!

Again?

Vancouver's notorious low wages. If I wasn't retired I'd take my skills elsewhere. Vancouver's not worth the struggle. I'm glad I left. Leaving enabled me to retire early.

They will always low-ball you

Never accept their first or posted salary. Negotiate and give a range. If they really want you, they will give more benefits, more vacation, less working hours etc in lieu of target salary. Never settle for less money than you’re worth.

It's very expensive to run a business in BC we have so many levels of Govt and regulation all with their hands in your pocket. Normal for rent to be well over $10,000 a month if you don't own the building.

Well Mitch, that is true for small businesses only. The larger ones have most likely been around much longer, and trust me when I say that the top brass of these firms are sitting pretty. Just take a look at the cars they drive and the number of expensive vacations they take. Oh sure, some of them work very, very hard as well, but the reality is that they aren’t doing enough to share the wealth and that must improve.

I only work as hard as they pay me.

It's all your and our fault

The wages are low because somebody out there accepts it and that sets the bar for everyone else. If everyone started to refuse, they'd have to raise the wage. We need to set up an online resource like Glassdoor that people can check up on and share stupid offers so we can all avoid these job postings, forcing employers to step it up. Rich is the person who can make this first and fast.
