hallowe'en costumes mandatory at work
posted October 31st, 2018 at 7:56 AM
got a call from my boss at closing time last night telling me I am expected to show up to work today wearing a costume. WTF? I told her I didn't have anything on hand...Why should I spend my off hours running around trying to put a costume together...spending money on crap? If an employer expects you to dress up for hallowe'en perhaps they can give you advance notice, supply a budget or rent a costume for you. Not showing up in costume. sorry.

Unless you sign off on it when you start working...you are not obligated to wear any halloween costume to work. Tell him to fuck off.

You could go to value village get cheap, new costumes or accessories. I agree advance notice, not just the day before or day of is not enough time as people are busy.
It's fun to get into the Halloween spirit and doesn't need to be costly. :)

""special clothing" includes a uniform and a specified brand of clothing;
...
25 (1) An employer who requires an employee to wear special clothing must, without charge to the employee,
(a) provide the special clothing, and
(b) clean and maintain it in a good state of repair, unless the employee is bound by an agreement made under subsection (2)." (Employment Standards Act)
So, sounds like a halloween uniform/special clothing. If your employer mandates that you wear any sort of special clothing (business casual, etc.) they actually have to pay for it. So, for example, if they want a man to wear a tie, they must provide the tie and keep it cleaned, etc.

Tell them it's against your religion. They can't force you then because it's a human rights violation.
