Stay home if you are sick

I'm really getting tired of these heroes who come to work when they are sick. I don't see the point in that. You aren't going to win an award, no one likes you for doing it and they think you are disgusting and rude. Walking around blowing their noses and sneezing everywhere thinking they are doing the company a favour? Or why is it that they do that? Clearly they don't care about their health or anyone elses. And companies need to start supporting workers and encourage them to not show up so they can heal guilt free. 1 person came in sick to my work and 2 people ended up sick after. So ya. Backfire. Jerks.

I completely disagree with you. Does your work offer sick days? If so, I will shut up. If not, then that person can’t afford to miss a days pay so they showed up. Yes, germs are spread but what’s the other choice? It’s the time of year to get a little sick. Maybe you should train your immune system and just shut the heck up

Damned if they do and damned if they don't, I imagine.

It’s the second part of what you said that counts. My boss makes me feel guilty for taking a day off when sick.

Absolutely agree

It’s anaz to me that companies haven’t realized by now that making people feel guilty for staying home when they’re sick is hurting their productivity. For at least the first few days of a bad cold people should not be around others if they can help it. Some of us have compromised immune systems due to a medical condition, or we have close family members who do. Being exposed to cold and flu germs can be very dangerous for those people, and you’d know that &anonymous if you had even half a brain.

Where I work, it's a formal policy to reward staff for not taking sick days. The culture is not supportive about time off for anything less than surgery or serious disease. People even boast about being able to get through work while being ill, and a cold would definitely not be considered grounds for time off. Not much of a choice.

I get 6 sick days/year

Anything more than that, I don’t get paid. That’s why I come in sick. Employers need to increase sick day allotments. Or raise wages so that missing a few days doesn’t stress me out financially.

I understand, but...

Most people in Vancouver can't afford to be sick.
And even if they do get a weekday off, some idiots bust their ass getting things "done" because they feel they have a windfall of time on their hands, and then they're still sick when they come back to work anyway.
But, yeah, money is tight in Vancouver and a day away makes a big difference.

I can't afford not to.

I hear you.

Even worse when those same c0-workers don't use their "sick days", bind them up and tack them on to their vacation.

I have sympathy, but they can at the very least, mitigate their effect on their co workers.

Yea it's gross. But...
At a previous company, we would get the Spanish inquisition the day after taking a sick day. Even if the boss was out of town, they would call and try to corraborate our symptoms to what we said was going on. Then a policy of no sick days was instigated. We were told if we did miss work we would be making up every hour (ie working a 9 hour day for 8 days or coming in on a weekend) This was an established tech company downtown.
So if your company has a fair policy in place (or, gasp, an HR dept to balance the crazy), by all means. But not everyone has that luxury.
