Mummy mummy!

Rents are so high here, everything so expensive, we have the right to cheap everything, we want to own a house before hitting 30... You sound like a whiny, feet-stomping teenager. When I was a young adult in this city 20 years ago I had 1-2 roommates because I could not afford a place of my own, I had to have two jobs to afford the things I wanted, and this place wasn't as big and international as it is now! Do your research, travel to similar cities and compare, or move to a small village; you don't deserve to live in this great city! You're a lazy, entitled whiner.

You're a lazy, entitled moron

You really are talking out of your ass. Twenty years ago the rents and mortgages weren't any where as high as today. My family bought a brand new 2br condo in Kits for 290k in 1998. You wouldn't even be able to buy a condo in Surrey for that money today.
Besides stating the truth as I have above, you could look at the issue from a purely selfish point of view. Who do you think is going to perform all the services that you use on a daily basis if the working class can no longer afford to live in Vancouver. Look at all the stores and restaurants that are cutting back hours of operation because they can no longer find staff. Who the hell do you think is going to serve you your food and drinks if nobody can afford to live in this city. Maybe, you should think about issues before spouting off like the self entitled ahole that you sound like.

great city

"my life was bad so urs has to be bad too" this crab mentality is so common here. just 'cause u settled for worse without complaining doesn't mean anyone else deserves that or has to accept it. have some self-respect and quite hating people for having standards for themselves.

That I would never own property here. No unrealistic expectations here.

Twenty years ago

I remember that too.
A house sold in kits by McDonald and Fourth, for around $400k. That same house sold last year for $3.3 million.
Bought an apartment for $89,000. To replace it today is $800k.
Before that,I rented a full basement in a house in Kits, 3 bedrooms,2 baths for $450 a month. Charged 2 room mates $250 a month each. Now? $2800 a month.

In case you hadn't noticed, the salaries have not gone up by a factor of ten......

Housing is a bit cheaper, and overall living costs are not much more expensive. But what is better is:
1. The amount of opportunities
2. The salaries (double Vancouver, e.g. I'd make 120-150k but I crack 300k with 4 months off)
3. The weather, with a warm jacket, it's always fun to walk around outside in nature and not be wet or dirty when coming back with dogs.
