... is not enlightening nor fulfilling. Phones or no phones, many people aren't interested in talking with strangers. There is only so much to say about the weather and a public train is no place to talk about personal matters. #ReadMore

I often look at my phone or put my headphones on even though I don't even have a data plan to discourage the annoying 'chatty stranger' everyone else is avoiding.

It's that most people have very poor social skills, they're avoiding activity outside of their competency/comfort.
So sad

You just don’t know what or who you might be missing or what you might learn from actually connecting, even in a small way, with your fellow humans. It’s so ironic that people say that we’re so “connected” because of technology, when in reality we’re more disconnected from each other than ever before. Humans are genetically programmed to be part of a pack, just like wolves. The long term detrimental effects of not connecting in a true face-to-face way with other humans is well documented. Our total reliance on technology in our society is scary, because of the catastrophic ramifications if the systems we depend on suddenly weren’t there for some reason. Multiple generations of people who are losing basic social skills and the ability to function without technology doesn’t bode well if they can’t access it for any reason. I’m happy that I’m old enough that I probably won’t live to see just how bizarre it’s going to get.

It’s not anyone’s job to entertain you. My social skills are perfectly fine; I just don’t wish to spend my energy on people I’ll likely never see again, or at their own whim. If I choose to engage or not, that is my perogative.

If I'm stuck on transit, it's most certainly not so I can provide you with entertainment. It's not my problem that you can't stand to be alone with your own thoughts for a few minutes. That's why people have phones/books/newspapers out, it's an indication to people with basic situational awareness that they want to be left alone as well. I live in Vancouver, if someone I don't know is talking to me, it means my day is about to get worse.

Vancouver was cooler in the 90s when people were friendly. I don't know why this is so hard to grasp.

Vancouver has never been friendly. You were younger and now reflecting on your life through rose colored glasses. Self delusion is wired into our brains. Look it up.
