Beyond Meat

I have been reading a lot of pro vegetarian/vegan and anti vegetarian/vegan articles lately. As a self confessed omnivore who has a pretty broad palate I am keeping an open mind as much as possible. There is one thing that is never mentioned in these articles though that creates confusion for me. If meat and dairy products are not meant to be part of our diet why do so many producers of vegetarian and vegan fare go to such lengths to replicate the taste, texture and mouth feel of meat and dairy products?

That's a great question. I'm certainly no authority on the matter, as I'm not vegan myself, but I would think it is easier for folks to cross over if the vegan products they are trying for the first time are similar in taste and texture to foods they are already familiar with or prepared before. Also, food is a pretty communal thing and most vegans are treated as outcasts already for eating differently. It's just easier for everyone for the food to look and taste similar. Less questions, etc. if you're still eating a “hamburger“ and not a rice-quinoa-mushroom-walnut patty. That said, I've truthfully eaten lots of delicious vegan foods so bring them on.

in a lot of vegan articles, is the insane increased amount of sugars and sodiums that often go into their food.

great, you lower your carbon foot print but increase your chances of high blood pressure later in life.

plus, most supplements are made in factories similar to medications. being vegan, doesn't mean your food is "natural", it's full of supplemental stuff made in sterile factories.

It's meant to be part of our diet....without meat protein we never would have evolved.

Those products are tailored to the people who are weening off of meat and dairy products. To help them transition smoothly into a vegan diet so that they don't feel shocked going from cheeseburgers and milkshakes to fruits and whole grains.

People have said that there are health benefits to not eating animal products and people have said that there are moral benefits to not eating animal products (both for the animals and the environment), no one has said that humans don't crave or aren't able to eat meat and milk. You are just trolling.

Meant to?

It seems odd they think there's a pre-determined set of things we are meant to eat. Are we meant to wear clothing? Or use money? There is no meant to in this world.

meat and dairy ARE supposed to be parts of our base diets. vegans push all sorts of myths about health and diet.

Hahah true!

You have got those vego whackos good. They'll still deny it and go crazy upon reading this though. They're nuts... although the nut texture composition tastes like meat :D
