Doing the dishes

I can't stop thinking about the fact that my neighbours hear my every move. I know that is part of apartment living, and it goes both ways. But it just feels like I have no privacy. I have strangers in all directions who hear every time I turn on the water or take a step or play music or go out or make dinner or laugh or whatever. I feel kind of imprisoned, I would like to whistle and a sing all day but I don't because they will hear me. It's not their fault, I'm sure it's mutual and I probably inhibit myself more than I need to. I just don't see a light at the end of the tunnel because I don't see how I could ever afford to live in a detached dwelling. How do you deal with it?

However, I don’t let it control me completely. I sing when I don’t hear anyone home and I make noise because everyone else is and has to so just embrace it and be yourself!

This was...

... the worst thing when I moved into a skybox. I grew up in a detached home, moved back in with family as they aged, and the idea that a skybox is a "home" is silly.

It's just a race to the bottom, so that we can have condo-slums for working people, detached homes for those families that made it before 2000-2010 or so.

Not sure if you live in a word frame building

But I live in an awesome concrete building and neighbour noise is minimal.

Move to a concrete building

I rented a unit in an old house in Kits. I could here the guy above me screw his one night stand, cough, walk around. Through the wall I heard the other renter sing when she had her iPod on. It made me nuts. The lack of privacy ... i could not deal with it any longer, so I moved to a concrete building. I don’t hear much now, and if I do, it is loud enough that I can go legitimately complain to the person in question.

Here’s how....

...we need to pressure the cities to improve the building standards so that soundproofing is better! Even high-end condos have terrible noise-transfer problems. It’s ridiculous that they are selling million dollar condos where you can still hear the person above you taking a pee! Rental buildings are even worse. It’s all so that developers can pocket even higher profits on the backs of normal hard-working people.

Unless you're stomping around

Your neighbours think while you're blowing last nights dinner out with a furious blast.
