Non-profit performing arts manager in Vancouver

Been doing this work since the early 2000s. I see attention spans shrink, technology continue to invade lives, non-Western European art forms continue to decline in relevance, philanthropic trends shift, and government funding continue to wane. Curious for thoughts: what's the future of the arts in this city?

I agree with your premise. That because of technology there are more options for people's entertainment. let's face it, many of us would rather stay at home and watch something on Netflix or YouTube... than spend an extra $50 to go out to something that might or might not be enjoyable. There will always be some people that want live entertainment. But that was never a large population and it is smaller now. So since you asked about the future of this sector, I will say that I think there will be very few and limited opportunities. Much less than now.

Comedy has become so diluted.

One of the arts that had an amazing underground scene for years due to it's moderation, has exploded to the point of nauseam.

I assume that has everything to do with the joy of going to concert sucked out by ticket bots and the impossibility to buy tickets at face value without b.s.

I am worried for arts in Vancouver is what I am saying. 2 of my favourites have morphed uglily in a short period of time.

Idk, I'm not super artsy, but whenever I do see art exhibits and plays and artsy stuff of that nature advertised, it's pretty much always either women dominated or "non- western eurpoean"- centric .

You would clearly have more knowledge on the subject than me, but it's just an observation from my experience.

As for the rest of the art culture. We have imported a lot of people from other countries who have much different interests than us. And people who pay more attention to the arts scene from their homeland then they do the arts scene here. So maybe we just need to wait a few generations for the population to be predominantly people who were born and raised for multiple generations in Canada and then there might be a huge artistic boom. Idk.

The future is more beer.

People are caring less and less about the entertainment and more and more about getting pissed. Without the booze, nobody will attend anything, no matter how good.

He hit it on the head. Would rather watch something on YouTube or Netflix than go out and spend $$$ when I need those dollars for my rent and other expenses that keeps increasing every year. That concert? Watch it on YouTube. Ballet performance? Watch it on YouTube. Opera? Watch it on YouTube... you get where I’m going with this.
