Spend your money on your things, not work things.
I used to participate in it all when I was younger: drinks, lunches, baby showers, etc. Such a waste of money and time. After being backstabbed by “office friends”, I don’t do anything extra now and my time and money are mine. $45 for a biweekly lunch sounds insane to me.

Forced socialization alone does not make for a good workplace. It often breeds resentment and creates cliques. Good consistent policies and firm established boundaries on conduct (uniform regardless of one's station), consistent and clear performance benchmarks and good communication is what matters.
