Is the real Vancouver those westside single family housing neighbourhoods where no one can afford to live and the population is declining? You think those neighbourhoods have character and "soul" and are not pretentious?
Because if we stopped development (i.e. building homes for people to live in) then all we will have is neighbourhoods like that (and a heck of a lot of homeless people and tent cities).

Personally, what I find pretentious is people who care more about "character" than affordable housing.

So sad and true

I’m in complete agreement.

Let me guess....you'd be the first one screaming about seismic upgrades to a school? Many old buildings were not built very well and even though developers try to maintain character and all that it's just not possible as they are crumbling.

Oh stop

A city is about the people. Just like whether a club or a party depends on the quality of the people to make or break the character, so is the same for neighborhoods and cities.
People here need to stop being bland. Stop blaming the architecture.
And BTW, people like you need to be more vocal. Call city hall, call your MLA, call your MP and demand attention. Be relentless, follow up. Yes, call repeatedly, ask what is being done, and when and what next. Stop waiting for someone else if this is so important to you and make your voice...and your vote...heard.
And stop being so boring and run-of-the-mill. Be the character you want to see in this town.

I live in Vancouver. My house is 104 years old. Lots of homes around me are original (at least 80 years old). What you say is true for some parts of the city but not all of it. I hope you have a peaceful day.

Can’t change the past

You mean you miss a different version of Vancouver, a Vancouver when you were younger. Real Vancouver is all around you, right now, all the time. You are confusing “real” with “nostalgia”.

I don't know how the city thinks it's ok to let The Panthage rot and demolish it for condos or building a tower on top of the heritage Catholic church downtown. And wasn't there something about building a tower on top of the Art Gallery?

If only new buildings were affordable. Not the case. Still going to be a homeless problem with all the new buildings going up especially when gentrification happens.

Also these newer houses being built won't last long. These houses come with a heck of a lot of issues waiting to happen. The houses here are built to the bare minimum when it comes to building codes and a lot of companies cut corners.

So good luck living in your affordable drafty and moldy housing @uhh...

Don’t get it

Why all the resistance to change ? Vancouver is not a very old city, not like there’s ancient architecture or anything. People need places to live, I’m all for the development.

"character"

Feb 22, 2019 at 11:00am

Yeah, lots of character, like any building owned by the Sahotas. Why have new buildings that one would hope would provide more space for people to live when you can have festering shitholes full of character.

People need to let go of history just because something is old. Old, small and run down doesn't advance a city with a perpetually growing population. Character is never going to make a place like Vancouver a world class city. Move on.
