BC Legislature

Yes, women should cover up. This is coming from a woman. If women want the right to go sleeveless, let's ensure men can do the same, and wear tank tops to the BC Legislature too. Bare shoulders is not professional on either men or women. Cover the eff up. I've worked and currently work with women in the office who wear low-cut, freckle-showing cleavage, backless tops, spaghetti strap dresses and skirts ending about 2" from the end of their butt. The office is not a nightclub or a bar or a fashion show or a burlesque show. You're there to work. I don't take any of these women seriously who show off 60% of their body skin at the office. Imagine a man showing up in tiny running shorts with side slits and a tank top showing 60% body skin in a meeting of 12 people. Think people are not equally grossed out? For the record, I'm not some "jealous type"; I'm a size 4 and extremely fit. But I cover up because showing flesh is nasty and cheap, whether you're male or female at work.

Judgmental

While I prefer to dress somewhat conservatively for work, you come across as extremely judgemental. There are elegant and work appropriate halter and cami blouses that show shoulders. I suppose you judge women who wear make up too? Like they say, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The nerdy guy isn't always smart, and the athletic dude isn't automatically dumb. The same way, a plain looking woman isn't necessarily smarter than what some people call a "bimbo." I have met many smart and successful women who you might not take seriously based on their image and how they dress. Be careful, some day you might get your ass kicked (professionally speaking) by one of them.

Isn't....

feminism all about double standards and no accountability ?

Wish I worked there.

I'd show up in a muscle shirt showing my scars from an accident, with hair showing out from my hairy back and chest.
Then in the first day- after these idiots complained- I'd claim sexual harassment and sexism at the workplace, file a claim, and get a payout for emotional distress.

Thank you OP!

I can’t believe the insane ‘equality’ bullshit that has been generated by this issue in the B.C. parliament. Cover up and start looking like grown adults in a professional environment.

You’re not being asked to cover up because you’re women, you’re being asked because you look like tawdry teenagers. Grow tf up!

No, no, no, no..NO

You sound like your talking about a sister wife...

Another woman in agreement with you

It is unbelievably unprofessional, not to mention disgusting how so women dress inappropriately for work. Especially women here in BC. Absolutely no class, not to mention no taste in clothes, but that in itself is a whole other topic. Women here lack self criticism. No, you don't look hot, you look nasty. Just don't dress like a 'ho and put on some goddamn pantyhose. Women here believe that anything goes, even leggings and flip flops. I cannot respect you for one second . The attitude of "I'm a woman and I can wear whatever I want" is so childish. It's work. So dress accordingly! And you Vancouver women wonder why men here don't respect you. Dressing like skanks will never get you anywhere. And I can already hear the beyond fucktarded commentary that will follow my comment. Ya, bring it on, simpletons!!

Agreed

What I don’t understand is why women won’t be honest with themselves and others about why they choose to dress they way they do. They say it’s “comfortable” and that it makes them “feel good about themselves.” For the first point, how is bare skin that sticks to the chair you are sitting on comfortable? How are the seams in tight jeans digging into your crotch comfortable ? Well, that actually feels good, if it’s rubbing a certain part of your genitals. As for feeling good about yourself, admit it, you “feel good about yourself” because you are enjoying your sexuality and enjoying the attention your appearance gets you. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Why can’t you admit that? And why can’t you understand that there is a time and a place for that, and the workplace - the Legislature!! - is not the place to be enjoying and displaying your sexuality? As a female lawyer, I can say we have come a long way in 30 years (I rarely wear a suit anymore, opting for blazer and skirt or trousers, and in summer I wear short sleeved jackets) also I practice in the hinterland which has always been more relaxed than Vancouver/ Victoria, but it’s a convention that goes back many decades that a person is not properly dressed without a jacket. So when the temp in the courtroom is too high, which can happen summer or winter, i ask the judge for permission to remove my jacket (which is always given). Funny I never see guys ask to remove their jackets or loosen their ties. Why is that? Please ladies, you are there to work, not advertise. Please limit your advertising to your own time. And please have the integrity to admit to WHY it is you like to wear what you wear. Hard to believe that in 2019 women still won’t take responsibility for their sexuality and choose to be coy and disingenuous about it.

Arms?

There’s a big difference between someone showing bare arms and someone showing 60% of skin. I agree that there should be some kind of professional standards, but deciding that bare arms aren’t acceptable is going too far. You also mentioned cleavage. It’s very hard for big - breasted women to find clothes that are actually flattering and show NO cleavage. 99% of the clothes in stores that look “acceptable” enough to suit your standards on women with smaller breasts, are going to be unacceptable for you on me. It’s either wear something like a tent all over, or something with a high neck that is not at all flattering and actually makes my boobs look even bigger. You’re very judgemental, which I believe is exactly what the women in the legislature are trying to point out.

Maybe, just maybe

What ‘anybody’ looks like should have NOTHING to do with the work at hand. Radical I know, but if others can’t focus on the work that's their problem.

In the Defence of Men

Mar 31, 2019 at 11:32am

If men showed up in a collared halter top, dress shorts and heeled sandals people would be in an uproar. If women want to be equal and taken seriously they should wear appropriate clothing. This is also coming from a young, very fit, conventionally attractive woman. I’m not jealous either. I also just think short skirts and backless dresses are not workplace attire.
