Discouraged by attitudes

No one is saying, we should all be more like we were back in the 70's 80's and 90's BEFORE everyone started using so many personal devices and social media etc but we are all thinking it in one form or another. Therefore, it is extremely discouraging to note that stereotypes about marijuana, welfare, disability, drug addiction (esp opiods) and crime /poverty are wrongly being attributed to the current situations that are so urgent and distressing. People who read the Georgia Straight in the past when it was the old days used to tell me to read the grass roots publication to understand whatever was going on in Vancouver. These days, I see too many instances of one human being's interests being contested in favor of another, or rude remarks about work for welfare etc. Let me tell you honestly that I had to be dying and going out of my mind with the circumstances in order to finally collapse and require government assistance. It could have been prevented by some much needed professional type of interventions but none were available. The main problem with our Canadian system is that it costs too much to look after emergencies, and our system does most often not kick in until it is already "too late" or "too little too late"... think about some of the worst child abuse and domestic abuse situations you might watch on true crime or in fictional movies. Now realize that real life can be even stranger and more cruel. I am saying look at the circumstances before you become too judgemental because my confession really is that I believe the homeless and the other underdogs are really the good guys in disguise and the ones who think they deserve further punishment are the bad guys dressed up to look like the good guys but underneath they are some of the most sadistic and cold s.o.b.s you could meet because they watch homeless and addicted people dying on the streets and suggest they deserve worse.

Too much

I agree with you about the situation of the homeless but you come across as very judgemental. Why did you have to add that thing about social media, personal devices, good old days in the 70s-90s? It has nothing to do with the rest of your post. Why do you think it's a fact that everyone thinks it was better before? Stop demonizing technology and everyone who disagrees with you!

Wrong

I’ve lived here for my entire long life. I was one of the original readers of th GS in it’s infancy. I’ve always been very tolerant of disadvantaged people, and I’ve believed that everyone needs help at some time in their life, and some more than others. However, the current situation is totally whacked. We are spending huge amounts of money on people who obviously aren’t doing anything whatsoever to help themselves. There are very deserving people who need resources and aren’t getting them, because too many resources are going to a small part of the population. We now have a reputation for having lax laws. We’re now a destination for low-lifes because of that. It sounds harsh I agree, but we no longer have the luxury of pandering to every drug addicted person instead of putting those resources into helping people who aren’t trying to kill themselves on an hourly basis. Enough is enough.

Whenever I meet a new potential friend or partner

I look for how much empathy and compassion and understanding they have for the people at the bottom. If they don't have any, I don't bother with them. Why would I want to be around anyone who doesn't understand the importance of kindness?
