Soooo Victimized

My sister writes Facebook posts along the lines of Sometimes You Just Try So Hard. Sometimes You Give and Give...(random ambiguous issue she wants to bait people with) meanwhile my sister-in-law hashtags everything on Instagram #socialanxiety #invisibleillness #otherbullshitlikethat. GUESS WHAT - we ALL have social anxiety. We all struggle with public situations and meeting new people and interacting. Stop being babies and limiting yourself with these stupid regressive shields.

I don’t think so. While I don’t agree that people should be posting stupid things on social media, you’re completely wrong that everyone has social anxiety. Some people have it so badly they literally suffer just going out in public alone. It’s not just about meeting new people, it can be so debilitating that the person is literally trapped inside their home. Before you so blithely put other people down, you should at the very least educate yourself about what is is you’re judging so harshly.

You know what else sucks?

Everyone feels anxious sometimes, most people have problems in social situations at least some of the time.

Social anxiety disorder is a real mental illness. It's common, it's treatable, and can be devastating for people struggling with it

Um...

The difference between “normal” day-to-day anxiety vs. social anxiety disorder is that one is annoying, while the other is life-debilitating. Comparing them against each other then devaluing someone’s experience because you were able to get over your “normal” amount of social anxiety makes me really frustrated on the behalf of your family member. It’s like comparing severe migraines with auras to a headache that can be relieved with something over-the-counter, then claiming that it’s just like a headache so the migraine sufferer should just get over it.

Maybe it’s time you take a FB holiday, OP. Use that time to read and learn to gain some empathy.
