I've experienced both sides of this. Read about the psychology of it because I lost my decades-old power of invisibility. And then people were suddenly much nicer to me and I couldn't figure out why. The curse of a suspicious mind - I'm leery of unexpected gift horses.
The halo effect is subconscious, very useful, and absolutely real and reliable. One doesn't have to build an empire on it to enjoy the benefits.
I love that metaphor, by the way, and you seem to have more than just "pretty" going on.
In fairness, many attractive humans offer nothing more than visual appeal, and continue to lean on it far past its expiration date. "Just a pretty face" is absolutely real and valid for any gender, ethnicity and culture. Some people live their entire lives as empty but very decorative vessels, just because they can.
All things considered, an appealing presentation is a very useful attribute, if you can get it.
